It will tell you if you get in without the key and try to drive away. I am not sure how long you can drive or if it will stop you. I doubt it. I think it just keeps telling you the key is not in the car.

Car will not shut off it will just keep telling you that you don't have the key in the car.

I love this feature! I don't have a purse but most of my friends have needed a lift at some point to get their spare key from home, from the wife and so on. The feeling of superiority that follows is always fun!

Almost preferred if the car shut off without the key. Would have sucked if I went to a restaurant, shut off my car, and was stuck there without a key and the shop was closed. |

Intentional feature.
It's a safety issue if the car were to suddenly shut off. Imagine your car shutting off on the freeway and the steering wheel locking... Sounds like it would be a very uncomfortable situation. |

I find the feature convenient. You can let the engine run, step out of the car and lock the doors from the outside with the key never leaving your pocket.

I think the smart suggestion is to have the engine shut off as soon as the key leaves the cabin. Not at some random point while driving down the raod.

All: It will continue to drive until you shut the engine off yourself. It will not start again until the key is present.
It's not safe for it to just shut off. Imagine if a pissed off girlfriend/boyfriend/it tossed it out the window out of anger or if the key itself failed? That could be catastophic (on many levels)

I know if I was 20 and working as a valet to pay the bills on the side hammering a car like this would be nearly irresistible.

I don't worry about the valets. There are usually much nicer cars than mine if they wanna hoon something around the parking lot. I always joke with them and tell them to have fun if they are going to drive it. It's only a car folks!

Having the car shut off on you when you're letting it warm up(inside) in the cold, or going back inside to grab something or what have you. It generally takes more fuel to start a car, than it does to let it idle for one minute.

I think it's just a car as well... but, the kicker? It's not their fucking car, so they shouldn't be doing it. It has nothing to do with it being just a car, it has to do with having respect for someone else's property. Definitely lost in today's day and age.

I was marely pointing out how shutting it down could be done. This is no longer true with modern engines. If it were, the auto start/stop feature would not be able to save fuel, yet it does. |
