Metallic tapping 3k-4.5k under load
Hi Guys,
I searched the forums and found a few threads alluding to this behavior, but none of the threads had a definitive cause of this behavior. Car- 2009 BMW M3 w/DCT, 45,000 miles with a good bill of health Essentially, I hear a metallic tapping coming from the engine compartment when the motor is under load between 3,000 to roughly 4,500 RPM (left rear). I've thrown a rod in a motorcycle, and this sound is very similar. That being said, I only hear it at that specific RPM range. I've driven some built LS cars that have a noisy top end, and I am pretty sure this isn't a noisy valvetrain. The sound is louder if more load is placed on the car (such as going up a hill in 3rd-4th at those RPM ranges). There is no loss of power (that isn't in my head ) and no codes are being thrown. Idle is smooth, and there's no stumbling in power delivery. Is this a known harmonics issue that other people have noted, or do I need to go get my car checked? TIA |

Best thing is...
Stop driving your car, and take it ASAP to your BMW/dealer ! When it's another case of bearing failure you will damage the S65 even more . Advice , Take no risks !

Sounds like bearings to me. I had the same symptoms and that was the case.

I'm more tired of the hysteria. The e46 was worse and you don't hear people complaining now that most have well over 100k on them. |

I understand this *could* happen, but it's not gonna take away from me enjoying my roughly 50 thousand dollar purchase. It's in the back of my mind and I've acknowledged potential failure, but I'm not gonna let it ruin the experience.

But yeah, I love my E90. It's gonna get repaired one way or the other if something bad does happen.

That means your engine wants to do launch control. Totally normal.
But really though, what do you expect from this forum without video or a sound clip? What other advice would you expect except for bringing it to the dealer for a union mandated hulk fist up your rectum? |

If so, I would stop wondering what the sound was and just continue to drive the piss out of it. Since it's obvious no one (including the mechanics I called) are aware of any specific harmonics under load in that range, then obviously I am taking my car in for a union mandated hulk fist up my rectum, as many have recommended. Thank you for your contribution. /love "me" |
