How an ESS 650 loses to a tuned M4
What's up guys.
I know some of you were disappointed when I got beat by Tightie and Terry's BMS tuned M4s. As it turns out, there was something majorly wrong with my car. If you haven't seen the results of my races, the link is here: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1062075 So fast forward to yesterday, I went to EAS to dyno for the first time using a mix of pump 91 and a couple gallons of e85. Results were very good and I will post in another thread. But before we began the dyno, I noticed that my water pump that circulates the water for the air/water intercooler system was not working. Steve from EAS pulled off the ECU cover and noticed the power wire was completely severed. How long has it been like this? Well I have no idea but certainly explains the results of why my car performed so poorly at the recent NoFlyZone 5 event. Without the water circulating through the heat exchanger, the IATs are not cooled off post-supercharger and the ESS tunes backs off timing when IATs are high. My guess is that I was under 500-wheel HP for the event. I know my results at the event were hard for some to believe but in no way was that indicative of what my car is capable of. In fact, after mixing in a couple gallons of e85 and having the intercooler fixed, my car feels like a rocket again. Don't know if I will ever get to rematch a tuned M4 but if so the results should be much different.

Glad you got it fixed. That happened to my pump wiring awhile back and the car loses tons of power. It's like having a heater instead of a cooler.

Wow you sound really insecure. Every thread I notice your handle it's something insecure about your car being on daily driver setup or now this when it loses. Then I noticed you all over an upgraded m4 turbo thread with excitement.
Enjoy your car, run what ya brung and leave it at |

You do need a rematch with Terry's car at the next NFZ, by then he should have the stage 2 turbos in with power curve moved over to the right so that should be a great run.

I just thought you lost because you were running 91 octane instead of race gas?

My runs against the M4's were on a blend of 91 and 97 octane to yield about 93 octane, which is typically what I would do in daily driver mode. Either that or a can of Torco on pump 91. Later in the day at the event when I was almost out of gas I dropped in a few gallons of 108 octane and that resulted in 5-6mph trap speed gains. I guess the much higher octane must have more than offset the high IAT's from the busted intercooler

I would have been somewhat insecure had i loat this race too. The e92 has a LARGE amount of mod money into it I'm sure.
Will be interesting to see the new results. Hopefully you can run a car with the Pure Turbos and newer tune to make it more apples to apples. The f80 pulls pretty good in the original video. Who knows maybe itll be even. |

Longboarder... I'm glad you found the problem and that your car is running better now... I'm curious, do you not have a gauge to monitor AFR? If not, would you think having a gauge would have alerted you to the problem sooner?

Correct I do not have gauges to monitor anything lol. This just demonstrates that anyone with a blower should get the AWRON guage. If I had this guage I would have seen abnormally high IATs as soon as the pump stopped working.
