Whine from engine bay... video
It almost sounds like a bad ground. It also changes pitch with engine RPM. Car was just purchased CPO at dealer.
Perhaps belt tension to tight or power steering? Video - Sorry for potato quality. |

I also just purchased a M3, 2011 E90, and it has the exact same noise. Let me know what you find...

Go drive the fuck out of it and see if it goes away. If it doesn't, go drive the fuck out of it some more.
Logic: It's CPO'd, go force it to break |

I was doing an online search about bmw oil pumps yesterday after he informed me what it was. It seems the X series as well as 7 series needed to have an oil pump redesign a couple years back.
Their issue sounded a bit like mine. |

This is an oil pump? Just bought my car and it sounds exactly the same?

Just went to pick it up this morning. They replaced the oil pump and all associated parts, tech stated whistle was gone.
Got in it this morning and immediately it started whistling again. They even brought up another M3 next to mine to compare. Needless to say, I have now driven (loaner) 2015 Tahoe, 2015 328i, and now a 2015 iDrive X3. I have to say, the X3 is fairly nice. next I will ask for an M4 or perhaps an i3.... As upset as I am, my SA is awesome, I could not ask for a better one. The techs just need to look a bit harder. I think it is most likely an easy fix. |

Check Power steering reservoir. Sounds low notice if it makes more noise doing turns low-speed turns

On another note, I picked up the car yesterday. On the statement of work, tech stated the whistle is due to "straight cut cam gears" and is normal. i.e, they are going to try very hard not to fix it. I am going to to take it to another dealership or at least a third party to diagnose. I should have known to stay away from Reeves Tampa in the first place. |
