How many labor hours to replace rod bearings?

To those who have installed new rod bearings, how many labor hours did it take you if you installed them yourself... or how many labor hours were you charged if you payed to have them installed?

I think its usually around 8 hours. I believe the popular forum sponsors who do a lot of these like EAS and Active can get it done in one day if they start first thing in the morning.

just had it done 2 days ago.

i can confirm, someone who has done it before, can most likely get it done in about 8 hours.

took 12 hours on mine. their first time doing the e92 m3. also swapped 2 engine mounts and oil pump chain tensioner.

15 and 17 hours seem VERY high! I could understand its a major and unusual job so the technician would probably want to play it safe, but a quote of double the time of an experienced mechanic seems ridiculous. I'll check All Data for the labor hours for a similar job and report back.

There are probably not many shops banging this out in 8 hours or less unless they have done a bunch and are using ARPs.

Guys, this isn't a race. 2 days is an acceptable amount of time to complete the job without skipping any critical steps or being rushed.

Great, but in your case, what is the effective billable time? 16hrs?

We have a package price in the sponsor's section of the forum with everything needed to perform the service.

If there are any specific questions regarding the service, please don't hesitate to PM/email me.

Billable labor hours for the job is as the following:

-7.0 Hours, removal and re-installation of oil pan
-1.0 Hours, Connecting rod bearings (1)
-0.3 Hours, each additional per connecting rod bearing (7)
-Total billable hours, 10.1

Expect 2 days for the job, I am sure most shops will not try to cram all those hours in a single day, this could be a recipe for disaster. As Tom@EAS said, this shouldn't be rushed.

+1. I done this back in Dec in my own garage. I would say 2 days/16 hrs is perfectly reasonable and would personally avoid a shop that claim they can do it in 8 hrs from start to finish having gone through this first hand. This is not a job you want to rush.

I absolutely think a shop that has done a bunch of these and is using ARPs is doing the job in under 8 hours. But I doubt many shops will do the job for you for 8 hours of labor charge.

Thank you Malek and everyone else who has contributed to this thread.

And yes, i definitely would not want to rush a "heart bypass" surgery on my baby. She definitely needs TLC.

The reason i was asking labor hours is because i am not located in California and if i was i would see Malek@MRF or yourself to do the job. Labor hours would give me the best indication on how long it may take myself, a weekend wrencher and not a pro, or if i should have a professional do it and how much they may charge.

How many labor hours does it take your shop?

2 full days/it's flat rate - every situation is different based on what we're presented with. Times will vary from shop to shop depending on experience and their procedures.

Someone that is zipping rod bolts on without checking torque, bearing clearances or following other critical steps can possibly get away with jobs quicker, but come at a huge risk. Choose wisely when picking a shop and not only based on price, these engines make expensive paperweights if things should go south.

It's a day job. A good friend of mine has done about 6 cars so far and no issues.

^ This is what I was quoted, ended up paying 11.5 hours, had each rod plasti-guaged and included the oil fill...

Started one afternoon, assembled next morning
