Let's talk about the next generation Audi R8
If you are like me, you will also be looking forward to the next generation Audi R8. Today some new information was released to the public from Audi Quattro.
Highlights are that the next generation R8 will get the same 5.2L V10 engine from the Lamborghini Huracan and it will officially produce the same power! 601hp to be exact. This time Audi is not making a mistake and is going to release the V10 version first. Also some good news in the weight department is that the weight will be lower than the R8 of yesteryear. Less than 3,200lbs, making it about the same weight as a 991 Carrera. DCT will be the only transmission available. Real shame since that 6MT gated shifter was so good. On the styling side of things, I think it will look pretty good, but I just think it will be a big mistake to lose the signature sideblade design architecture. That sideblade is the hallmark of what makes an R8 different that the rest of the supercars out there, but from the silhouette of the camouflaged models in shown so far, I think it will have some pretty sexy lines. I do hope that they really modernize the interior though, it needs it badly from the last 1st generation R8. I also wonder if they will incorporate some convenience features available on most Audi's and BMW's to include: - Heads Up Display - Comfort Access Doors and Ignition Start - Lane Departure Warning - Blind Spot Detection - Pedestrian Warning - Standard LED Headlights - Heated Steering Wheel - Surround View Cameras - Night Vision http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1...rcar?fbfanpage

You are describing the V10 Plus model, but IMHO it will be the version to buy and will be a tremendous car. I like you am worried about the loss of the signature side blade, but until I've seen pix of the whole car I'll reserve judgement. From all the reviews thus far of magasine writers getting rides in the passenger seat, it seems as if it's dynamically even better than the original.

Im excited for the release--- I still love my 2012 even if it has an SMG gearbox but this is just going to be so much better, as it should. The car has been in market for almost 8 years now right? To this day when I see one driving it catches my eye: front, rear, side- a great car.

There is another article I read, but I forget where, that stated the next R8 will indeed come with LED Headlights as standard and will offer Laser Headlight as an option in European, Canadian, and markets in most of the rest of the world, except for the U.S. It also stated that as someone already pointed out the V10 model will feature 540hp and the V10 Plus Model will feature 610hp, but I can't remember if that was 610PS or 610BHP. I'm pretty sure it is 610PS, which is what the Huracan is.
The next R8 will also feature a full LCD instrument screen like the new Audi TT. This will be badass. I have felt that the R8 needs an update in tech so very badly. They hardly improved the MMI Navigation system in the R8 from 2008 to 2015, which I thought was stupid. We have to remember that the R8 was supposed to be the every day supercar, a car that can be daily driven in comfort and still retain it's supercar status, which was quite unlike the Lamborghini Gallardo 7 years ago when the R8 was first introduced. Since then supercars like the McClaren 12C have come out which also offer every day usability and now the Huracan comes with a DCT transmission (among other things) which makes it a more usable every day supercar. I really can't wait to see what the exterior and interior design is going to look like. I still don't like that they split the sideblade up between top and bottom on the next R8, but we'll have to see it before we can really pass judgement.

The R8 is in a weird spot. Business-wise, I don't really get why it even exists. The options in that price range are way too many and I've never been sure if the Audi brand belongs in that price segment.. especially since they are now chasing volume and making cars like A3, etc. I also similarly shudder when I see all the BMW X1s and the MB CLAs. This'll simply dilute the brands.
If they want to continue to appeal to the enthusiasts, split the //M, RS and AMG dealerships and provide a better experience to buyers and visitors. Lately, these places have started looking like the Japanese Big 3 - Honda, Toyota, Nissan.. and there's no way all this has not already crossed the minds of the German Big 3. After all, the volume decision would've been rather strategic and not made on a whim. Summary: unexcited to plunk $$ for the next gen R8 and it's a sad thing.

In the end, the car looks great, drives great, has German precision, and costs less...who cares if it is the same brand that makes a $30K sub-compact sedan? |

And, what purpose would it serve VAG to compete internally with Lambo by setting the R8 at the same price point as the Gallardo/Huracan? And those "volume sale A3's", most likely at lower profit margins, pay for the development costs of the R8s, etc. As you say, why not target prospective used 458 buyers, etc. if you already have brands that aimed at the 'new 458' market. Audi got everything right with the 1st gen R8 - it should be a future icon in the UR Quattro sense. W.r.t. interior aesthetics & tech, I agree the 2nd gen R8 should be a major improvement if the 3rd gen TT is anything to go by. The TT has raised the bar on Audi's already high standards. |
