Black MPerf Side Gill Recall?

In anticipation of getting my car, I ordered the black MPerformance side gills from Tischer and received this email:

"Part # 51712356980/1 (grill left and right) has been recalled by BMW due to a defect. We do not know when they will be available to order again."

Has anyone else heard of this? Part number is 51712356980 and 51712356981.

Could be related to this thread. OP in that thread stated "the ones from BMW tend to peel off"

That could be it...why the heck are they using cheap stickers on a $70k car... is it that hard to make a plastic imprint and have it painted?

The product is currently on back order throughout the nation. We recommend just getting the IND ones for $10 more. The quality is fantastic.

It would be nice if certain websites reflected that information and let the customer know prior to purchase as I dont want to pay $18 in shipping for just the black front grill which I could have combined with another order somewhere else.

From what I have been reading, the IND ones are exactly the same as the OEM ones and also have had the problem with the sticker peeling off.

Can you tell us what makes the IND ones better and if they make their own from raw material?

We have not experienced any complaints while selling IND's cosmetic products, nor have I heard of such issues about their products.

IND uses the OEM cores, and paints them in a gloss black or optional special colors. There are no issues with flaking or peeling because they go through a extensive quality control process. Every side grill is examined with meticulous detail. Not many people know this, but any of the products with paint bleeding issues are immediately trashed. Only the "perfect" grills go out.

The stickers are a gel coating, so they are weather proof from peeling and fading.

The question is not about the quality of the paint work by IND. I have owned painted oem parts from IND in the past and now. So I know their quality.

The question here what makes the IND grill different with not having the stickers peeling. If what you said about the stickers being gel coated and all, so why is it peeling?

Basically there is nothing different. IND ones have the same chance of the stickers peeling as they are the same part but sprayed black. Any stockist of IND parts will clearly talk them up however. Personally after seeing the price of some easily powder coated stock exhaust tips being sold for a small fortune i decided id rather not have the parts i want than pay over the odds from those guys.

I have not heard of it peeling.

Nor have I seen anyone on the forums say anything about the IND stickers peeling off.

I have only seen these issues with the OEM

same..it has been peeling from the base. I wonder if recall means we can ship them to BMW for an exchange as I haven't heard anything from BMW.

Hmm interesting. I'll follow up with IND. We have never experienced any issues with their products.

Except for the mineral white reflectors, because it is a very hard paint to match

What's there to follow up with IND for? If anything, you should call BMW for an explanation. LOL.

only issues with OEM...... then also IND will have issues seeing as they buy OEM ones then merely spray them.

I am on my second OEM set, dealer replaced first ones due to the M3 Logo peeling away from the Gill. Second set starting to show minor peeling. Frustrating!

My IND ones arrived peeling - yes, not even exposed to the elements yet. The M3 Badge it's self is lifting away from the painted trim piece. I chuckled, because "OMG OMG IND Why are you complaining about IND" sipped a beer and couple dabs of clear gorilla glue later it's on there. It's fine.

If any members have a peeling side grille that came from IND contact us for a replacement. Just like the painted reflectors we offer a warranty on all parts.

Update from Germany: today bought my OEMs from dealer. Unpacked right away to check ... and yes they showed very minor peeling at the narrow side. I explicitly asked about any recall, they checked the system and said negative. I took those anyway, since I am now blacked out with black/carbon M Performance bits, so can't stand the chrome side gills. They told me they will replace them anytime within next two years if it gets worse or there is actually a recall.
