G30 eDrive variant - wow
So scott 26 dropped this little gem over in a thread that has been pretty much dead for two years after supposed pics of the next M5 were dropped:

Interesting place in the forums to drop this little gem.... 670bhp and over 1000Nm of torque - if proven true that would quite the Tesla killer. Wonder where the next M5 sits in all of this? It can only be more powerful. (see post #52 for his full comments) http://g30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...2#post17921132

Imagine spending such a premium for an i8 and then this is launched..imagine the sense of confusion that you've just spent so much over MSRP and then this happens...

This info should be on the homepage as very likely ground breaking news regarding the next M5.

Based on the carefully timed statements coming out of BMW over the recent years, I unfortunately think RWD is done for the M5. I'd love to be wrong but this edrive information seems to confirm BMW's intentions for the next M5.
If there were any other options on the drawing board, the P85D killed them.

Plus AWD is AWD no matter how clever it is especially for a heavy car like M5/M6. FF is only 4100 lb

Damn B-1, good fucking catch dude!
Yes I understand that from word a long time ago that ALL BMW Series in the future will have a hybrid variant, but I didn't think that BMW would go the direction of developing a regular BMW Model that would be a Tesla Fighter. Yes where on earth would this leave the M5? Maybe M Cars of the future will go the way of Porsche 911 GT3 vs the 911 Turbo. With say a future BMW 560i eDrive having 670hp and 700tq, but the M5 would weigh 700lbs less, have no eDrive, Twin Turbo Engine at say 600hp, and AWD. I can imagine that even with the Carbon Structure Architecture of the 35up platforms, with eDrive, they will be very heavy but maybe still lighter than the 4,900lbs Model S, but no where close to say a 4,000lbs 2018 M5. So I guess I'm saying that even if an eDrive 5-Series may have a ton of power and torque, it could still be easily outperformed by a much lighter M5 of the future. This is just my speculation based on this new info from Scott26 and what other companies like Porsche have been able to achieve in cars with less horsepower than than their highest horsepower models.

The fact that the drivetrain is capable of 670 bhp does not mean that BMW will tune it at that state for the next 550i. They don't make such quantum leap between generations. That power output would likely be reserved for the next M5.

I'm still of the belief that BMW will not go hybrid with the next gen M5, however, as a sign of the times, news from Porsche CEO as to decision this year if 991.2 will have plug-in hybrid variant/i8 rival: -
http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-new...-year---chief/ My thoughts agree with B1, if the 'ActiveHybrid' becomes a Tesla killer, '550i/5xxi' still offered to satisfy V8 devotees/diehards, where does that leave M5? Perhaps it can have less power (but the right sort) and concentrate on weight savings to still be the halo car of the range? Is it possible to engineer up35 with increased CF components?
