Stock Exhaust Note Captured with External Mic

In preparation for my downpipes going in on Tuesday, I thought I would capture some quality audio footage of the stock exhaust setup. My Go Pro Hero 3 Black edition was mounted inside the car and I utilized an external mic mounted to the rear diffuser to capture the sound.

I have heard externally mounted Go Pro videos and the sound was just not crisp. This setup allows me to capture the S55 exhaust note in its purest form, for a stock exhaust I must admit, it sounds pretty incredible.

Next up will be a comparison of the stock setup with my ER Catless downpipes and stock rear section. Enjoy.

Nice video! Valves open, the stock exhaust really does sound great imo. Just needs a minute or so to warm up.

That sounds mental! Makes me wonder why people spend thousands changing it to be honest!

So even if you don't do the valve mod, it sounds like that on WOT anyways??

If you are driving in sport plus mode for throttle the valves will open.

i agree, i think the stock exhaust sounds good 80% of the time, for me that 20% isn't worth $3,000+

if i do any mods it would be downpipes first

Great work capturing the sound so cleanly. I've always like it, now after hearing this, even more so. So hard to tell unless you are running side by side with another f80/2. Nice job OP!

Thanks for the kind words. I found a great external mic setup that is really crisp.

Seems like Sport mode (throttle) has the same effect (it certainly sounds like it does). Either that or the flap opens with very little prodding on the accellerator. Efficient is where you really have to get on it (WOT) to get the valve to open.

thanks for the video, reminded me again how amazing the stock exhaust sounds.....very hard for me to justify $4k + on anything that will sound better than that for the cost.

One question since were all on the same page, please don't tell me to search.....when is the exhaust valve open? In sport plus, i understand it always is. What about "efficient" is it ever open in that mode when warmed up etc? What about "sport"? Thank you

I think in sport and efficient the valves won't open until you go WOT but I have not tested so I could be very wrong. I will test it out.

I think so far the MPE and Akrapovic is the best exhaust I have heard as far as aftermarket goes but the price of those is laughable.

can you share your setup? What mike did you use where exactly was it mounted? Did you run the wire through the trunk? Am looking to soup mine for ED.

1. Go Pro Hero 3 Black Edition Mounted inside to passenger side rear window

2. GO Pro external mic adapter

3. Go Pro skeleton housing

4. Dagee external mic:

5. Mic run through trunk and clipped to diffuser. I used some painters tape to secure it without fear of wrecking my paint.

6. Used my CD player mount to hold my phone

7. Used go pro iPhone app to control the camera

wow, that does sound good for stock, thanks for sharing! Does make you think twice of changing the exhaust.
