6MT shift knob - stock vs. m-performance

My apologies if this has been covered before - anyone switch to the M-performance shift knob on their F80/82? Your comments?

I test drove a F30 335i m-sport with stock and found it to be quite good. Unfortunately, I cant get my hands on a M-perf version unless i buy it. Also felt like the M-sport was just right height while my arm was on the arm rest...any lower may feel a little awkward.

It's bad practice to rest your hand on the shift knob of a 6MT, so where the knob falls when your arm is on the center armrest shouldn't be a factor when deciding how short/tall a shift lever suits you best.

I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing that the M-perf knob is slightly shorter than the one that it's meant to replace. If this is indeed the case, the throws will be shorter, which a lot of people like.

It is shorter and I think it makes a noticeable difference. This combined with the clutch stop makes shifting much quicker with less throw (pedal and stick). I have had the car for 8 months and 7,500 miles. Didn't get the shifter and clutch stop until about a month ago, so I had a lot of time to compare. Both are highly recommended IMO. Shift knob doesn't light up, but that was not important to me.

Concur on moving your hand after each shift too. I was taught to put your hand right back on the wheel after each shift.

My apology for the misunderstanding, i was talking about only during shifting. After shift, my RH goes to the wheel. Hopefully this helps to avoid noob status.

Any link to a good clutch stop?

I much prefer the M-Performance shift knob. It does take a sec to get used to the feeling. It's more thin, a little shorter, and doesn't light up. In the pictures, it seems bigger than in life. At first, I missed the bigger, beefier OEM ZHP knob. But then I realized the M-Performance one gave me a more direct, precise feel, which I much prefer. The knob is smaller and shorter, but weighted, so has the proper balance. That, along with the Alcantara boot, makes this a winner in my book.

BMS has a clutch stop, and I think there's an ebay seller that BMS ripped off of. I believe Turner has one too.

Very simple. But it will take some arm strength to pull the knob off the shifter.

This was one of the first mods I did to my M3. I absolutely love it. The stitching matches the SS leather as an added bonus.

here is my setup which is not cheap but exactly what i wanted. had this knob on my old 335 as well and needed it again.

I prefer the OEM (ZHP) knob over the M-Performance one. I find it too short for my linking, plus I like the feel of the leather.

I got mine for $180 on Amazon. Granted it's the one with the light gray stitching and not the iND stitched one.

I didn't feel like paying another $150 for tri-color stitching.

Installed the M Performance shift knob yesterday... (btw i think the zhp is my all time fav shift knob) and....

I love the new knob... it took a bit to get used to but the throw is noticeably shorter while also sitting a bit lower... overall, its a great piece of work

Plus the IND one matches the oem e-brake boot so its a deal!

I made the move with the m performance knob and hand brake combo after seeing this post. I love the look and feel of both pieces.

The knob does sit lower than the stock and that was probably my biggest reason to get it, I am happy with the throw but I always felt the knob say up too high, the shifts feel quick and more direct now. I highly recommend this, I took pics of the two knobs to try to illustrate the difference. It's not perfect but I hope it helps a little.
