Painted Lip - Being told it can't be done...

I went to my dealer's auto body shop to get an estimate on painting the front lip of the car. Their response was that they tried it before and given the lip's material he has had flaking occur as early as someone driving off of the lot.

For those of you that have painted did you do anything special to prevent flaking/wearing? Need advice. Powdercoating won't work to my understanding but are you truly painting, plasti dipping, etc.?

A reputable body shop should have no problem painting it. You should definitely not have issues with flacking

As long as the piece is prepped properly, then there are no issues.

Thank you for reaffirming...looks like BMW 's auto bodyshop (on dealer's premise) just gave me the grin-fuck.

+1. They should use an adhesion promoter... it's the same thing they'd use on your urethane bumper. I understand the hesitation of the shop as the lip is low to the ground and is bound to get scraped and flex a lot. But there are literally a thousand shops out there that will paint the lip. I'd rather take it to one of them than try to talk a shop, that doesn't want to do it, into doing it.

I've done it twice. The first time the paint ended up chipping fairly quickly. The second time I had the lip Xpeled a week after we left it in the hot sun to finish curing after painting for a week. Bingo - still looks perfect. Don't think I'd ever paint a lip w/o factoring a film treatment into the equation. But all of the above posts apply.

Interesting - I have to ask, why would you paint the CF splitters? Weren't the originals already AY? Seems to me it would be cheaper to 1. remove the CF splitters, or 2. not put them on in the first place.

We must get to the bottom of this mystery...

You can't have the MPerf lip without the CF splitters.
