601M wheel size differences

Hi guys,

I'm a new member on this forum and own a 2014 M5 as my daily driver which I love.

I have the 343m wheel at the moment and have just ordered the 601M wheel from my local dealer... I know I'm going to get crucified about their inferiority in comparison to the 343M but I would like to have both.

The question which I found very strange is the dealer asked me would you like the 9j/10j setup or hate 9.5j/10.5j!!???!! I spoke to the parts manager and he said yes the computer is showing 2 sizes that match the chassis!

Can anyone shed some light on why this is the case and why would anyone want a narrower wheel!

I have ordered the 9.5/10.5 setup.

Thanks

I believe the 9.5/10.5 set-up is for the M6, and the offsets for those sizes are too aggressive for the M5.

I hope you ordered the right set-up...

Thank you for the reply.

The options came up on the chassis of the car, so very confused.

What if they are M6 setup, how does that affect the car when you say "too aggressive" thank you.

The 9.5/10.5 is for M6 with the following offsets
Front: ET 31; Rear :ET 19
The 9/10 is for M5 with the following offsets:
Front : ET 32 ; Rear ET 34
The advantage of M6 setup is the possibility of installing 305 tires (on rear)
causes more aggressive look and you will get better traction.

Thank you for the info

I think that with the wider wheels even with standard tires it will give slightly more stretch on the tire which will sharpen up handling.

I just hope they don't look weird on the rear as the offset is a big difference. Should I stick with 9/10 or get wider wheels?

What would you guys do!!

I bought MPS CUP2 which I will put onto the wider rims.

I have yet to find an M5 with M6 343M/601M rims with 305's. The lower offset will most likely cause them to rub, even at stock height.

They will stick 21mm further out in the back than the 343m currently on your car. I'd suggest taking a look at your car and considering if you like that look. It appears to me that 21mm is enough to cause it to rub if you don't make any changes to the fenders.

You need to ask MCarsFan ...

Not sure about lots of experience, but I'm running 305s on the rear and they've been fine. But if you can order 343M m6 wheels which you can do btw, you will be that much better off. The traction difference is significant. 4000 miles on 305s..I'm still running M5 343Ms

I recall a thread a member posted some pictures to show there are lots of room between the rear wheel and fender of M5. I thought it was you... my bad

OP, the M6 setup stands 15 mm out side (on rear) compare to M5 setup (ET 34 vs ET 19) and I think there is no rubbing issue. Here is another thread an M5 guy has installed 433M M6 rims (with the same offset and size of M6 601M or M6 343M)...

I found it odd as well to see it on real Oem too. I have CP and M6 rears rub slightly with the oem spec Michelin pilot super sports 295/30r20 on 343m (M6 with 19mm offsets.). There is no way you get tires wider than 11.6 inches (tread width) on that wheel without rubbing the felt on the inside wheel well (just enough to leave a mark on the tires)

If u look at actual tire specs you'll find the Mercedes spec of Michelin pilot super sports for same XL rating and the 295/30r20 size actually has a narrower tread width and likely will not rub with m6 10.5 inch width and 19mm offset. I haven't checked that tire to confirm however.

I would triple check any rubbing before leaving dealer if they're mounting them. Fronts will be fine.

Good luck!

Close, but you forgot the width difference. The M6 wheel is 10.5" wide vs the 10" of the M5 version.

15mm is due to the offset.

Another 6.35mm is due to the width (half of 0.5").

Nope
You forgot the fact that 295 mm (11.6") tire is wider than either 10" or 10.5" rim...
So the actual width of wheel is defined by tire (in this case) not by rim. you can check the measurements here if you are interested:

http://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp

Simply put the M5 numbers in left side (295/30/20, 10" ET 34) and M6 numbers in right side (295/30/20, 10.5" ET 19)...then Calculator tells you everything you need

Ah, definitely true. It'll rub the tire before getting to the rim.

Interestingly, that calculator says that even going up a full 1.5" to a 11.5" rim width won't change the outside clearance. That wheel would stick ridiculously out of the fender face.

You'll be completely fine. You'll love how it looks too. M6 GC wheels are the same spec

Thanks for the feedback.

Wheels are on and yes the rear wheels do stick out a little more than I wanted but overall they look great on the car... I'll post picks tomorrow.

One question - I got new sensors and the TPMS is going crazy!! How do I calibrate as usual reset via I drive not sorting out problem.
