Do LOTS of reading, both on here and other sites. Go to any local cars and coffee or other meetups where BMW owners get together and ask questions. Go to local dealers and take test drives. Call local BMW repair shops and ask them about a particular model and repair concerns. Finally, make sure you take any car that you're serious about for a Pre Purchase Inspection.
Best of luck and after you purchase, come back and share your baby with the rest of us!

Just picked up a 2013 Coupe, pulled a lot of all nighters reading this and other forums before buying. Definitely worth $150-$200 for PPI and I got one with a bit of warranty left so I can sort out any kinks. I'm new here too so feel free to pm with questions, if you get one be ready for a lot of "is that noise normal?" Moments. Totally worth it though, they're amazing machines.
