Bmw star labeled tires
How critical is it when getting Michelin pilot super sports to have them star rated which seems to mean optimized for BNW???

I have the same issue with the Michelin PSC2s...fronts are only available for Mercedes. I don't think it makes much of a difference considering they are front-engine rear-drive cars with similar weight distribution and handling characteristics (more likely to understeer). As far as I can tell, the tread looks identical and definitely don't feel like performance is compromised at the track. The rears are usually the ones to give up anyway, as again the FR layout favors front end grip and apex dive-bombing. I'd be more worried about tires for substantially different layouts or weight distribution (e.g. Porsche 911s)

The Star spec tires are OEM approved BMW tires. When a tire gets the star rating, it means BMW had the tire manufacture make some changes to the tire to complement a specific BMW vehicle. Unfortunately, BMW and Michelin both do not tell us exactly what was changed.
With that said, the Michelin Pilot Super Sport was never an OE spec tire for the E90 M3. So this tire was not specifically tuned for your car. The Star will make no difference on your vehicle. The newer M3 does come with the Michelin PSS OE, so that tire was specifically tuned for that car. But this does not apply to the E90 M3. You can use the standard Michelin PSS or the Star version. It would not make a difference on this vehicle. |
