New to the M5 scene
Hey everyone. I've been a member of these boards for about four years now, and I believe I'll be coming back after a long hiatus. Seems like time flies when I first had my 2012 BMW 335i that I've upgraded from a bone stock sport version. Kept the 335i until last October and traded it in for a 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera. I loved, loved, loved the Porsche. My future fiancé on the other hand, HATED it due to the impracticality of the car (and the high payments prior to getting her engagement ring). Therefore, 6 months later, I get t-boned by an old lady and the Porsche is a total wreck.
Once I received notification that the Porsche was declared totaled, I went out on a one week journey to find a replacement... 2013 Maserati Gran Turismo (an upgrade over the 911, but I'd end up single) 2016 Maserati Ghibli S (eh, not that impressed with all the Chrysler parts and the regularity of seeing one in So Cal) 2016 Mercedes C450 (liked this one a lot and was pretty close to buying it if it weren't for the high interest rate I was approved for) 2016 Mercedes C63 S (amazing, but the current retail price is ridiculous) 2013 BMW M5 (I originally came to the BMW dealership to test drive a 650i Gran Coupe and a 535i until they informed me that they had a used M5 in stock with two other interested buyers. After a test drive, good deal on the price, and a great finance interest rate, I purchased the car. However, I left it at the dealer to have them fix a minor dent on the driver's side fender) This is the 5th day waiting on the body shop the dealer is working with to fix the dent, and I am eagerly awaiting to drive my first M car home! So far, I've ordered the painted side markers, gloss black kidney grill, and I will be picking up a set of used H&R springs from another member here this Friday... I'm leaning towards the AWE touring exhaust due to my awesome experience with having the AWE system in my 911. I may keep everything else stock as my funds will be limited for this M5 project (ummmm I still owe my future fiancé an engagement ring by the end of the year). Any comments/suggestions/tips/opinions on your experience with the M5 that you can share?

Congrats and great choice. Prior to the M5 I came from an E92 M3 and 335, and for an all around daily driver/weekend car I'd say the M5 is by far the best.
Skip the catback exhaust and just do downpipes/tune (either flash or JB4 based on your needs) - depending on your choice it could run you less than $3k for an easy 650+rwhp. |

I dont understand how these bodyshops take so long for repairs. Its honestly laughable. 5 days for a fender? I could redo an entire nose in 5 business days.
Anyway, congrats on the car! |

I know right? The dealer who sold me the car called me the other day and said their dent guy didn't feel comfortable fixing this very small (but noticeable) dent on the driver's side fender. According to the dealer, he was having the car sent to the body shop this past Monday and said that the turn around time he gets is about 4-5 days ... Well, I figured I might as well receive the car in the best possible condition since they're taking care of the dent for me.

I take mine in for random warranty stuff all the time... they just smile :-)
Of course I took the tech for a ride and he could barely stand afterwards! |

I live in the So. Cal area and I'm really looking in to tuning the M5. It's been about a week and a half now and the dealer still has the car. I have some minor mods in the garage waiting for my new beast to arrive. I'm looking in to a Dinan tune or an ESS flash tune from EAS in Anaheim. I opted to purchase the extended coverage for my vehicle which should last until 100k miles or until 2019 (bought the car CPO at 49k miles). Would you still consider tuning the vehicle based on the current amount of miles it has? I probably plan on keeping her until around the time the warranty expires.

I think I know the car you picked up. In Irvine right? That was a steal at that price, I test drove that one and almost pulled the trigger on it. CPO with 49k miles and they extended the maintenance plan to 75k and warranty goes to 100k.
Saw that same dent on the front corner LOL. I'm also new...picked up a 2013 Alpine White/Orange interior just last Monday. So far I have installed 3D style front lip and side skirts, the rear diffuser is CF but OEM style. I put 12mm MS spacers and am contemplating on lowering it with H&R springs. I purchased a black grill from one of the members as well. I have my IND painted reflectors on the way. Future plans are wheels, CF trunk spoiler, intake, downpipe, exhaust, and ECU tune. Tomorrow I am having someone wrap the chrome on side grill and door handles. |

Oh and if that is the car....it has a solid maintenance history.
When I was shopping I saw a CPO at Beverly Hills BMW. Looked clean had 50k miles or so. When I looked at the service records...oh my. It had a bent rod at around 40k miles and was in the service dept for a while. Notes said "bent rod, metal shavings in the cylinder, oil and water mixed". That's MAJOR! If they replaced the engine then I would have considered it but looks like they just sleeved the cylinder and moved on. BTW regarding upgrades and the dealer, I brought mine to Crevier and met another guy with a white M5. We chatted for a bit and he had all Dinan stuff installed by the dealer so no issues on warranty for him...if I just have the $$$ to do what he did LOL Last edited by tec333; 05-19-2016 at 01:32 AM.. |

My buddy who has installed the suspension on my previous cars is doing the work. I ended up buying a set of used H&R springs from a member on the board and slapping on 10mm/12mm H&R spacers to go with the stock wheels.

Wait for the AWE, muffler deletes drone like mad between 1600 and 2000 rpm and will drive you made. I have had AWE product before on my GT3 and love it, great workmanship, materials, engineering and great / easy fit.

They're stiff, I had the KW HAS on the 911 I had and the KW V3 on my former 335i. My favorite for the price would be the KW HAS. But I got these used springs for $155 and I can't complain, I wanted to keep the drop conservative since the fiancé would likely be driving this car at times.
