Suspension at High Speed

So the other day I was fortunate enough to stretch the legs in my M a bit. I should also preface by saying that I do NOT have the adaptive m suspension as I did not plan on tracking the car a ton.

Now my dilemma, I noticed once I hit about 140+ I couldn't help but notice the car felt like it was floating. This was obviously discerning as it felt very planted until I hit this speed. I got to 150 thinking maybe it would settle down a bit but unfortunately it did not.

Has anyone else run into this? If so, how did you fix it? I'm thinking I may need to throw some swift springs on the car as well.

I have experienced the same floatiness at high speeds. Especially in swooping corners.

CF roof is too light to keep the car planted.

But I don't have a CF roof. I was really surprised with this. My old 350z felt a lot more grounded at the higher speed than my f82 did. I'm happy hear that dmk has experienced a similar thing.

Do you guys think springs would help?

Springs alone would make it significantly worse. Springs and proper dampers would help.

Thank you! I know next to nothing when it comes to suspension so this will help.

Not that I'm helping here, but adaptive suspension for the track? I would think street driving is where it's needed. Battered up roads, comfort, want to play, sport+, half way sport.

I have notice it's a little loose up high. Get the larger lip spoiler? Not that I think they are much more than aesthetic but I'm sure it provides a bit more force to the rear end at high speeds.

Yes, I always assumed my car was in what would be equivalent to comfort mode. Read on a different thread that a guy experienced a similar issue with suspension in comfort and he switched to sport+ and it took care of things.

I like the splitter idea. Worst case scenario i have a good looking splitter on the front end.

Any chance you could buy it back?

Lol, I have no desire to go back to a Z. Plus I traded it a couple of years back.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my f82 but was a bit surprised by the way it was at speed.

There is a good chance that Adaptive suspension would resolve this issue partially. Outside of that, maybe the car is lacking dowforce at these speeds.

OP, can you clarify what you felt when you mentioned "floaty".

Hmm.. Odd. I've not noticed this until about 175. Pretty planted until then.

That's because the verts are so much heavier than other M's....

Steering felt looser, felt like the back end was getting light and almost starting to subtly shift back and forth.

It could have been a rut in the road but I don't think that was it as the car didn't seem planted any more.

Not really. I have adaptive and its floaty on rebound.

It does well on the compression stroke, but fails on rebound.

I'm going Ohlin coilovers to resolve bad stock rebound damping.

IMO, anything wearing an //M badge SHOULD NOT feel floaty under any circumstances or speeds.

I use steering in sport +, while a little on the heavy side, it makes the car feel a little more stable, or controllable anyways.

OP... do you have a lot of miles since there last alignment. it's it possible your alignment is off?

That would be my guess as well, my car certainly doesn't feel floaty at any speed ( I have the passive dampers as the OP ). I really only had extended stints at these speeds on A-bahn though since I haven't tracked my car yet.

I have 10k on the car and have not had an alignment in some time. I will be putting some new tires on soon and will get the alignment done then. Hopefully that takes care of it.

My 2015 M4 didn't feel "floaty" at all at high speeds. The opposite, actually.

I haven't had my 2016 ZCP up to speed yet, but I'd guess it would feel the same or better.

It could have been road conditions that made it feel like that for you.
