My M5 Was Just Hit, Is It Totaled?

Hi Guys,

My 2014 M5 was just rear ended on Laurel Canyon Blvd in Los Angeles. When looking at the photos should the car be totaled? Thx

Ouch, sorry to hear. Hope there were no injuries. It is hard to tell from one picture, but I don't think it will be a total loss based on the one picture. Hope it resolves quickly either way.

no.

new rear bumper, light, possibly.. and probably a new 1/4, blend the rear door... align the trunk..

if you have any questions regarding repairs, pm me. I don't like mis-information that is always spread on forums regarding vehicle repairs. Everyone seems to know everything about something they've never done.

A good shop can make your car like new again. That is very fixable.

Ouch this hurts. No your car will not be totaled. If you leased nothing to worry about if you purchased this will hurt a lot.

If you own, make sure you look at "diminished value" and possibly file a claim.

Terrible. I'm almost afraid to go out driving now. First our good friend with his 139,000 mile E60 M5 gets sideswiped by a lady texting and running a red light, now this.

Make sure you claim diminished value. Will probably be same amount as repair cost.

Thanks for the advice. I am leasing this car. Can I have their insurance carrier provide me with a car rental equal to a M5 while my car is in the shop?

You can ask, but it probably won't happen.

I am dealing with a very similar (less damage) situation. Someone clipped my front end. I asked for a rental car that was comparable with the M5 and they gave me the standard "we have a contract with Enterprise for $25/day and that is what you get".

Definitely pursue the diminished value. I was successful in getting that back in '05 when I had an accident in my M3 at the time. It took a long time to get that all resolved (almost a year) because most of the carriers really do not want to pay out on diminished value.

That's an easy fix. If I were you,...I'd shop around and try to find a shop that can save the rear quarter panel. It's never good having to "cut a replace a panel"! The best a shop can do is close,....@ 99%.

The bumper,...bumper cover, etc. is easy work!

Yes you can. And technically BMW can charge you for diminished value too, although they probably won't.

My E39 M5 was about $17k in repairs for a similar looking hit.
Sadly the adjust came out and said "bumper and paint, not totaled".. Spent half again cars value on repairs.. @ 180k miles now and rear had never been right..

Insurance told me if other person is at fault than a "like" rental is allowed and they will go after the $ from other insurance. Careful though, cause after 2 years of postponed litigation between the two insurance companies they "misplaced" my rental info when they finally settled. Should have gone for the Kia not the Mercedes...
