Spark Plug / Coil Change - DIY Question

Thinking about tackling my plugs and coils soon. Anyone have any pointers for our cars - things to watch out for or things that are hard to get to?

I'm more experienced with plug and wire changes on standard OHV pushrod V8's so any pointers for our S63tu's would be very helpful and great!

Thank you

Make a DIY when you do it.

I considered it as I also did/do it on my trucks (lots of room).
However, I have never done it on any of my sedans.

In the case of the M5, I bought the plugs and coil packs, then contemplated the driver side back plug/coil access. I then picked up the phone and called the indy shop for an appointment.

It just looked like more of a bear than I wanted to wrestle without a good DIY guide.

Not hard - 45 to 50 mins.

Just unplug and move ECU's out of the way (no need to remove coolant lines) to access the rear two. Need to move the charge coolant reservoir and the reservoir on the driver side as well (just unbolt and push aside... not remove).

Unclip and yank out coils.... get the right plug socket to pull the plugs out and repeat for each cylinder.

I just had my spark plugs changed out and gapped, I watched for the most part. It doesnt seem hard, just like how all_motor described. You're basically moving things out of the way a little bit to get to the coils.

Coils from the dealer are about $35/each I think, as I had to replace my #3 coil.

People buying the coils anywhere besides the stealership? If OEM was so good, they wouldn't have such a short life cycle...even if to be preventative.

ECS is where I bought my full pack (plugs and coils)...no issues to date. Discussed in this thread.

It's very easy to do, but you need a thin-walled BMW sparkplug socket tool. I bought one off amazon for 20 bucks. If you have any kind of handy at turning a wrench it is kind of self explanatory. It took me about an hour or so to replace all my plugs. Next time I do it, I will do a quick DIY.
