Thinking of buying used 2011-13 M3 coupe; general issues to watch out
I've own an E46 for many years, over 150k miles, until it died from a no-fault accident. I never had any problems with that car besides doing routine maintenance versus what I hear people generally said online for years.
I'm looking at low mileage M3 coupe DCT, with 40-60k miles, not tracked. I've read about the S65 rod bearing issues and the lawsuit. Is there any potential unusual problems that are costly to fix that I should be aware of , that are not normal maintenance? Any thing to watch out for while I take a test drive. Also, how much is it for a 3 year extended warranty for these cars, if they don't have warranty anymore? Thanks. |

That rb is blown out of proportion! There's no solid or concrete data to suggest a wide spread issue. There's members in here with over 100k miles n had no issues.
I've been told that if you take care of your shit it will take care of you. Good luck |

throttle actuators never fail to fail, most die between 45k-90k miles as far as we can tell
It's a good idea to lube the throttle linkages every 6 months to get the most life out of your throttle actuators. my opinion on RBs is change them at 90k-100k by the opinions vary wildly on this topic the EDC modules sometimes go bad and start draining the battery the washer pumps often leak...replaced mine I had a fuel pressure sensor go bad and thermostat started sticking open. So yes some things will go bad, but I personally think the experience is worth it. I did most of the repair work myself so it wasn't too expensive but I did spend a lot of time researching and doing it. |

I replaced the DSC module and battery around 30k miles - warranty (CPO) covered the module. When warranty ends, will use local independent shop vs. dealer.

They are very solid cars, but they aren't perfect. People simply don;t know enough about the rod bearings in these cars to make any definitive conclusions. I tend to agree with the one poster about replacing them near the 100k mile range, but that's just personal preference. There are occasional issues with the throttle actuators and if your car is so equipped, the electronic damper module. I've had my car for 1.5 years and the only problem I've had is that my battery died. I replaced it and so far, all is good.
