Is the New BMW Z4 3.0L as fun as an Audi TT ?
Please, only respond if you have ever driven or know someone who has driven an Audi TT.
I have the older generation Audi TT now, and I was wondering if I would get the same fun factor feeling out of a Z4 3.0. Does the Z4 have the same feel as an Audi TT, is it more fun ? Does it feel just as fast ? Thanks. |

I drove the last generation TT several times and I drove it like I stole it. It's honestly not a very fun car from a sports car perspective compared to the Z4, S2000, Boxster, etc. I owned a Z4 3.0i for about a year before; the TT doesn't even come close to the Z4 3.0i in fun factors. If you think the TT is fun now, you're not gonna be disappointed with the Z4 3.0i.
The Z4 3.0i is both quicker in reality and feels quicker than the TT 3.2.

I have a Z4 3.0si and I test drove the new TT 2.0T when it arrived the dealership. I agree what GP20 said, TT is fun, but lack of sports car characteristics like stiff suspension and exhaust note. If you want more go-kart like, go for Z4, elise, S2000, etc. TT is more like all-around daily driver car.

i have a 2.5 and even the 225TT doesn't even compare.
4cyl sound, turbo lag, lack of insulation on the top(bare metal showing on 04 225 TTQ) vs. 6cyl sound and instant torque, with perfectly matched gear ratio, .... it is SO MUCH BETTER than the TT

I was able to test drive a 3.2 TT about a month before I got my Z4. And the Z4 is SO MUCH more fun, looks better, and makes you feel better than the TT. I really like the look of the new TT coupe, but wasnt blown away by the drive either.

I don't know if I'd go that far... I liked the new TT more than the 335i but not half as much as my 3.0si

I drove friend's Z4 M Coupe last month, and it was really awesome. Wanted to trade E92 for Z4 3.0is Coupe, but then I recived information that new Z4 E89 will be in shops in less than one year time. So I will stick with my current bimmers until E89 arrive. |

I test drove an '05 Audi TT for a friend who found a car on Auto Trader in my area. All I can say is that the Audi is much quicker than most people give it credit for. It's not the fastest car in the world by any means, but I was actually impressed with the power output of the turbo. The model I drove had an aftermarket intake, was chipped, and had an aftermarket exhaust so it really sounded mean to boot.
I was really impressed with the throttle response and I think it probably is quicker than my '05 Z4...BUT that's where it ends. I have 2 BMW's so I've gotten fairly particular when it comes to details in automobiles....some may call me a car snob, but screw them. The audio system was good, but not as good as the Z4 wityh premium audio. The seats seemed "cheap" if you ask me and the the overall appearance of the dash just didn't look right in comparison. But the two biggest problems I had with the car were the overall exterior appearance that I REALLY don't care for (looks like a VW bug to me) and something much more minor.....the steering wheel. Every '03-'05 Audi TT steering wheel I've seen look old, faded, cracked, etc....the leather just doesn't wear well. I know that sounds really stupid, but to me that really stands out when looking from one car to the next.

I just read the other posts on this subject and I guess I have a couple things to add:
first of all I test drove the Audi TT coupe, not the 'vert. second, I've owned an s2000 for about 2 years and although both the Z4 and TT were fun to drive the s2000 probably took the cake so-to-speak. Granted I had to rev the piss out of it to get any power but if you could keep it in the 6k-9k RPM range then it was an absolute blast to drive. The s2000 felt much more like a "go-kart" than the Z4 does. Although the Z4 is very nimble the s2000 seems to have that aspect down much better, but you really paid for it on the streets...very poor ride quality if you ask me, much worse than the 18" RFT's on the Z4 3.0 with the sport package. The s2000 revved to 9,000 RPM's and was a sheer joy to drive on short trips but REALLY lacked the creature comforts you'd find in a Z4 or even a TT for that matter. I've never driven an Elise/Exige but from what I've heard those are slightly worse than even the s2000 in the "comfort" area.

My previous car to the Z4 was a 2000 Audi TT 180 Quattro. I had it for about a year, and it definately did not give me that same smile factor the Z4 did.
I guess power is no contest being that I owned the slower model and not the 225, but from my personal experience, the Z4 was faster through the corners and more power. Plus I always notice that I get more stares in the Z4 than I ever did in the TT. Needless to say, after I test drove the Z4 with a buddy of mine, I pined over it for 3 months before I bit the bullet and traded in the TT for the Z4.

I too drove the new TT before going for my Z4 M Coupe here in the UK and can confirm that it isn't anywhere near the Z4 for feel/handling/etc/etc/etc. Yes the interior is nice and is what initially pulled me there from the RX-8 PZ that I had previously, but I can't really say that it's any better than my Z4MC's. I suppose the fact that most of the TT's controls are garnished by a bit of (usually genuine) metal gives it the nod over the Z's more wobbly air con and a-bit-plain-looking stereo controls, but in terms of overall feel, there's little in it.
Where there is a big difference is your connection to the road, and the general feel. In the TT, I felt completely isolated from everything - there's zero steering feel, the wheel is far too light, and the ride is very floaty. The one thing I will say is that the magnetic dampers are clever. It always felt floaty, but when I tipped it into a roundabout, it stayed much flatter than I expected it to given how much of a boat it felt. But, really, is that what you want? Something that feels floaty and disconnected until you push it, where it suprises you by not wallowing as much as you expected it to? Not me thankyouverymuch. Given that the TT gets massive praise in the press, I was truly blown away with just how bad they are. I should've learnt from my not-quite-fantastic RX-8 ownership experience that press reviews don't really relate to the real world, but hey. Oh, think this is my first post, too... So hi! :-) |

This post is really bringing out the lurkers.
I traded my 2002 225 TT in on a 2006 z4 3.0si coupe this past January. Yes the Z4 is more "fun" than the TT, however, I think the amount of experience this board has with TT's speaks to the fact that both cars are very much in the same class. The Z4 is faster, (0-60, 30-60, 60-80… anyway you want to test it), sounds better, gets more looks, and is generally more fun. I liked the TT interior better, got 30mpg, drove better in the rain & snow, and as a daily driver was generally more comfortable. My wife (who shares the daily commute with me) missed the TT for a few weeks, but has come around and now agrees the Z4 was a good choice. Get the Z4! |

Right thats what I wanted to hear. I can't really afford the si, so do you think the standard 3.0 would be fast enough, and would it be as fast as a 225 TT ? Thanks. |

SupraSkylineSTI, I think the 3.0 Z4 would still feel more fun, tighter handling & stiffness, better road feel. Z4 is a drivers car....the wife doesn't pick at her fingernails while driving now...she's to busy DRIVING. |
