Shifting problems
I own a 2004 3i auto and was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. When I am in manual mode starting out in 1st gear everything works and shift fine...unless I put my foot to the floor then it will not shift easily out of second gear. The rpm goes to redline then I have to back off on the gas while I try and upshift. Usually takes a second or two until it will shift. Anyone else have this problem? I live a few hours away from a bmw dealer and it takes about a month to get an appointment. Just looking for Ideas until I can get it to a dealer.
Thanks Budd |

ha ha thanks. thats what I wanted but the "boss" said I had to buy an auto so she could drive it. Otherwise the car would have turned into a toyota solara conv. not a z4...couldn't let that happen. lol

Get an owner's manual.
You pressed the gas pedal past the kick-down switch. That means the car will down-shift to the lowest gear available given the road speed and engine speed regardless of what gear you're currently in, and that happens to be first gear in your condition. You can not switch out of first gear unless you take your foot slightly off of the gas pedal above the kick-down switch or when the engine hits 6,000 RPM. All this is detailed in the owner's manual. |
