Tossing the run-flats?
Researching the web about run-flat tires for my 1er. Lots and lots of horror stories out there about repeated run-flat failures with the overwhelming majority seemingly on BMW cars. Is the smart money on just abandoning the run-flats? And then that probably means upgrading the suspension which will be too soft (even with my MSport package) with the less stiff sidewalled non-RF tires. Also would mean now carrying a jack, lug wrench, bottle of Fix-A-Flat...

I don't think my suspension is too soft for my non-runflats tires. And after having screw go into the tread and sidewall I really think runflats are overrated. All the BMWs I am looking at now have PSS tires too.

For sure ditch the RFTs. It's the first thing to do! It's made around the run flats so it might feel softer than before to you, yeah. But that can be fixed, too.
Put all the shit under the trunk mat, next to the battery and you're good to go. |

I just made the switch and picked up a donut/spare. If you don't care about having the 100 dollar BMW tire change kit, I recommend stashing a bottle jack and wrench next to the battery in the back.
Lederhosen congrats on the m-sport find. |

Hate the RFT with a passion. Finally getting the newly released Continental tires mounted tomorrow. And Firehawks are now in stock for 215/245s I believe.

Yup, I ended up going with the 215/245 combo, pictured above. Heads up tho- the 245's are ~$175. They were only charging $112 for the 255's before they went on perma-backorder...

Not true. Just had PSSs installed yesterday and no issues. Frankly the improvements in ride quality and responsiveness is nothing short of amazing. So happy I ditched the run rocks!!

Absolutely loving my Continental ExtremeContact Sport tires. And suspension doesn't feel soft or floaty at all thankfully. Will be running this tire from now on, and I think it is a good upgrade from the previous Continental DW tires I used for my 328i.

How do you like them? I've heard nothing but good things about them. I'm considering a set for my car.

Well, I've only got ~140 miles on em, so am just starting to get a true sense of how they'll settle in.
So far I'd say they fairly earned their no.1 ranking on TireRack. Although it's still early in their life with me, they seem comparable to the last gen Conti DW. I can't compare against the new Conti Sport version, haven't had a chance to sample those yet. Dry is great, I'm still being easy on em a bit, but find low gear traction to be significantly improved and am having to relearn the line where TC kicks in- tho I had bald bridgestone RFT's in the back before so that's not hardly surprising. Wet I haven't seen a hard core Florida down pour yet, but in the few light rains they've behaved really well, very much reminding me of the DW's as noted above. Initial turn in is, of course, a touch slower reacting than the RFT's. I've only had the RFT's on the 1er, so can't really compare turn in feel to PSS or DW's on this platform. After the autocross specific alignment I've run for the last several years on the Speed6 pretty much anything seems to have a really slow turn in tho, so I'll just say it's perfectly acceptable. Suspension feel is certainly softer- still very detailed just less harsh. I'm on the stock 135i bouncy bits. I'm beginning to feel the stock RSFB's. Happy I got the WL inserts to stuff in there. I'm looking forward to seeing how they behave with another 10-15,000 miles on em, but for now I'm happily another positive review in a long, l o n g, line of positive reviews...

Just wanted to give my review if the firehawks. I have had them them in my car for almost a year now and there is nothing bad about these tires that I can say. I have put them through their paces and they have never let me down. They have been pushed in the texas hill county, pushed at the tail of the dragon, and only when they are really pushed at the track the front starts to let go. They have never felt unstable in the rain and so far the tread wear after 10k miles looks great. The ride is smoother than with the RFT and they respond better. I hear they are hard to find now but I hope firestone keeps these in production.
My car is a 2011 with cp upgrade and mhd stage 1 tune. I'm running 225/40/18 and 255/35/18 tires on 261 wheels. |
