Buy an M4 now or wait for the next generation?
Hi guys,
I am seriously thinking of buying an F82 Competition (order placement before end of July). I finally had the chance to drive it in the M Track Days in Barcelona and I have fallen in love. Coming from an M135i this would be a huge improvement. My only concern is that, as a bimmerpost reader, I already know that F82 EOP is going to happen at around 06/2020. My heart really wants the car but my brain is trying to stop me until the new generation is coming (or go for a Giulia QV or an RS5 instead). Taking into account that I would not change the car for 5-6 years minimum, is it a clever decision to go for the M4 now? I think I know what the answers will be but I just needed to get rid of it... |

Buying an "M" car is never a clever decision, it is an emotional one. Only you can decide what car stirs the emotions that make it worth the money you spend on it.

The longer you stay on this forum and read/look at posts and pictures, the harder it will be for you to hold off another few years.
Buy it and never look back - except at the cars you're racing. |

Well considering that the earliest a new M4 would be out would be late 2020, but more likely 2021. And that the new "competition" package will likely be over a year or two after that, I say buy now. In 5 or 6 yrs you can likely still get the new generation or move on to something else.

If you want a manual this might be the last generation to offer one. I'm personally sad I missed being able to get a E9X generation M car new.

If you really want the competition package be aware it isn't typically offered the first year of production so you may be waiting quite a while for next gen comp pack. It's only 2017...

Since you've heard from the supporters of the 'heart', I'll champion the 'brain'. I'd wait for the 2028.75 M4 CS. That way, all of the bugs will have gotten worked out of the new G46 chassis, including the rod bearing, subframe, and crank hub issues. The tuners will finally have cracked the ECU, and will be able to flash tune via phone app. Also, you will be in a much better position financially. And last but not least, BMW will probably include a back-up cam as standard equipment. Probably. WIN-WIN in my book!

I don't love the look of the Alfa Quad, nor its reliability/dealer network concerns and I'm not interested in any Audi that isn't an R8. Rs5 is a great car, but remember the engine is hanging over the front axle, and it is not as agile or sporty as the M. I am not saying it's a poor choice because in the grand scheme of things buying a 70K-80K is never really a logical choice, but the M3 was the clear choice for me and again the M3 looks way better than the Audi does too.
I guess if you aren't totally sold don't do it. I was sold the minute I saw it in the flesh and drove it. If I had to really convince myself to do it, and really didn't truly love it I wouldn't have bought it. It's expensive, but worth every penny IMO..... and I am a cheap ass in general with most things. I also don't chase futures with next generations of cars. Who knows, you may not like it or it may not fit your needs in 5 yrs when the 2022 Comp pack M4 comes out. Life is too short to miss out on what makes you happy or treating yourself. |

Thanks guys. That's what I needed (and expected) to read. Spending that amount of money is not easy. Just wanted some support (and humor) on that. Now I just need to create a new topic about the doubts I have with the color

Good. You already knew what you were going to do. Waiting 3+ years was not an option that you would have been happy with!

Another option is to do a three year lease and decide at the end of it whether you want to purchase the car or wait a few months for the next generation to arrive. In three years time, our crystal balls should have a pretty clear picture of what the Gxx M4 will be about. There's even a small chance that the Gxx M3 will have already debuted. And if not, the X3/X4 M will definitely be on the market, more than likely previewing the M3/M4 drivetrain.

Buy or lease the current model immediately, drive it, enjoy it, let the new one come out, give them a year to work out the kinks, go for M number next. Life is too short to be constantly putting things off and waiting.

Get one now and drive it till next gen out. Trade the current one in for the new gen M3/4. Problem solved!
