My cell phone trips the passenger seat occupancy sensor

Am I the only one that thinks it is ridiculous that my iPhone 7 sitting on the passenger seat sets off the seatbelt fasten chime? I mean you can't put anything on the seat without that damn warning firing off. You would think an ass that is going to be in the front seat would weigh at least 60 or 70 pounds, considering children should be sitting in the back for safety.

Not sure what they are thinking.

That doesn't sound normal. I put all sorts of things in my front seat and don't get the chime unless it is something very heavy such as a couple gallons of milk. For the rare times that happens, I simply latch the belt to turn off the chime.

My iPhone doesn't trigger it...but my iPad does. I always figured it had something to do with the overall length of the iPad - aka, it was "covering" a decent portion of the seat, which tripped the sensor.

It's very sensitive for sure...

I had the same issue in my X5. BMW replaced the sensor and it was fine after that.

I regularly have a laptop bag on my passenger seat without any issue.

Same here. Phones and tablets won't set mine off, neither will a bag or two of groceries or either of my 2 dogs (14-18 lbs.) for that matter. Sounds like a bad sensor if an iPhone or iPad is setting it off.

I have had it happen once. I think I only had a baseball hat and iPhone on the seat. It confused the heck out of me because it started on a twisty road, and I couldn't figure out why my seat belt chime started to go off till I pulled over.

Could never figure out if it was the iPhone , or if it was the weight of the iPhone AND the hat. Test were inconclusive. I deleted some apps off my iPhone to make it lighter and it stopped.

Seriously though, I am glad to see a couple of other people have had this happen to them because it was the weirdest thing, and it only happened that one day for a couple of hours. I have thrown a camera, iPhone and other things on the seat since, no problem.

OP, there are a lot of things you can get coded on your car. Seat belt chimes off, LED lights anti-dazzle (quite amazing), air conditioning set to last position before turning off car, etc. etc..

Happened to me 2-3x too. My iPhone was the only thing in the seat one of the times. It's random. I put my backpack in there daily and it never does it.

This is not an issue for me. That sounds extremely annoying and too sensitive!

Doesn't sound normal - I place my iPhone 7 Plus on the passenger seat regularly (almost daily) and the sensor is not triggered.

pretty sure it's a capacitive occupancy sensor. so it's not just the weight of an object that will set it off.

I regularly put my briefcase on the passenger seat along with my iPhone and I get no alarms or warnings.

Same here - I can put phones, laptops etc in the seat without issue. My 12 pound dog will set it off if she lies down in the wrong spot tho.

Cheers

Happens to me also. Pixel phone and nothing else trips it sometimes. It's random.

I just belt the seat belt even if no one is sitting on the passenger seat to stop it from going off.

+1 -- I'd get the sensor replaced.

Btw, anyone know if that sensor also controls airbag deployment? i.e. if there isn't anyone in the seat, does the passenger airbag still deploy during an accident?

Cheers,

I've put things of various weights on the passenger, certainly heavier than an iPhone, and I've never experienced this problem.

Electronics can set off the capacitive seat mat as it no longer is just a weight sensor. Even a charging cord plugged in and on the seat can set it off. The dealer would tell you this is normal operation and not replace anything, the testing procedure asks if any electronics were on the seat.
