DCT Drivelogic D mode questions

First off, I am the new owner of an M4 (MY2015 with 11k miles), and can't say how lucky I feel. It's always been my dream since I was a kid to one day be able to own an M car, and never thought I'd be able to get one. Luckily, work has been good lol. Coming from a 435i with a dinan stage 2, this thing feels like a completely different car/beast.

So couple of noob questions!

1.) What exactly is the difference between D1 and D2/D3 modes?

2.) And I read that it isn't great for the car long-term to stomp on the pedal on a straight line while under Automatic/D3 mode... any merit to this?

Thanks for the help!

1) As you go up in D#, your car will hold the gear longer before shifting up. More RPM, torque, noise, fun, at the cost of fuel efficiency.

2) Probably, as you're running higher in RPM in D3 vs D1. Probably marginal. Just stomp it in D3. That's what you got this car for.
