Check Engine - Emissions
Hoping for some guidance here. E92M3 with 8000 miles and getting the check engine increased emissions thing. Likely a oxygen sensor. I currently have stock exhaust but have MPE ready to install. My plan was to install exhaust and see how I like the sound and if I want more then add test pipes or X pipe. Given this what approach would you take? Get this oxygen sensor thing fixed or ignore it and go ahead with exhaust mods and then code out CEL if I get X pipe?

Pull the codes and replace the O2 if needed. If you intend to do cross pipes or test pipes, I'd recommend a tune to prevent further CEL issues. Otherwise you will have to reset it often.

Read the code first. A lot of other things besides a O2 sensor can cause the "increased emissions" message.
Your car is trying to tell you something is wrong, don't assume it's a simple post cat o2. I would read the code, fix the code, then install the mpe. If not loud enough, find someone local with an xpipe or testpipes to see if that is the level of loudness you're looking for. Adding test pipes or xpipe to anything other than a stock muffler adds a lot of volume. Last edited by JsL; 08-22-2017 at 05:45 PM.. |

Get the code read first before making any purchases of what you think could be wrong. Post here and we can give you our feedback, but if your running the stock xpipe it most likely is a 02 sensor.

As many have said, it can be a variety of things. Installing your MPE now won't affect your ability to diagnose or fix whatever issue it is since the MPE is post factory X pipe (resonator and primary and secondary cats and the O2 bungs etc.
Pull codes, diagnose, fix issue, then determine if you want more sound post MPE. I think that BMW was forced to warranty TB actuators to 10 years 100k miles at least in the state of CA as a CARB thing. Might want to check with VA if that's where you are. |

Thanks for the great feedback guys. I'm taking to dealer tomorrow morning and will post the results when I find out what's going on. Incidentally my car's warranty expired July 31. Yay.

Hey guys quick update. It was in fact an oxygen sensor gone bad. As mentioned the car is only a few weeks out of warranty but the dealership was cool enough to cover this repair entirely. Thanks for all the feedback.
