I know it means "owned" and refers to when some is humilaiated or just dominated... ie. guy getting baseball to nuts from small kid's bat. but where does pwned, powned, pwnt, etc. derive from?

Urban Dictionary is worse than Wikipedia. That is not where it came from as it has been around longer than WoW has.

It is L337 geekspeak. That's about it. Used mostly on IRC channels by people that had nothing better to do than make stuff up and talk crap to one another.

I think "p0rn" turned into "pron" to get around message board and e-mail filters. Maybe the same thing about pwned? You generally say that to someone as a "kick in the head" so to speak. Maybe moderators decided it was not civil enough and banned the word leading to the mis-spelling
