X5M F85 2015 battery discharge error turn car on @ dealer now.

ottawa weather and cold snap for past two days, we are at about -20c, today thursdayy dec 28 2017 was -25c this morning and still same temps for next few days.

error message when car turned off, turn car on engine discharge.

brought to dealer as of now, had three errors on the fob that say issue when charging battery in cold weather, there is also a another x6m that is in the dealer shop since yesterday with the same issue as mine, mine is an x5m.

last night i drove around at 125km/h in ds mode 4th gear only @3000rpm approx for 1.25hrs, when i stopped and measured the conductance test i was getting 760 CCA on a 900 CCA rated primary large battery.

just to give some back ground, there are two batteries a 90Ah and a smaller 50Ah. the following was observed after the driving stated above.

the 90Ah was rated at 900CCA and measured anywhere from 680CCA to 760CCA with a voltage of 12.21V down to about 12.01V

i put a maintainer on it over night as follows:

-14hours of charging, it stated it was in storage mode and fully charged by 9:30am this morning.
battery tender rated at 1.25amp so i dumped about 17 amps into it.
when i took of the tender and measured the conductance at the back the following was observed
90Ah or 900CCA battery was reading 568CCA
50Ah or 500CCA battery, smaller one, was reading 267CCA
the voltage at the terminals on the larger one was 12.01V
the voltage at the terminals on the smaller battery was at 12.57V

dealer said they will look at it. error message is when car is turned off it says turn engine on discharge battery occuring.

will update later but i think the car is booked till at least tomorrow since the x6m was still on the hoist this morning when i dropped my x5m for the work.

take care but i think there is definitely defective parts in the charging system. this reminds me of the issue i had with other x5, the 3.5i that had a bad IBS cable but was told by dealer to put a trickle charger on it.

UPDATE:

so when driving and at idle i am reading 14.7-14.8 volts on the odb for the battery charge.
after many measurements today i seem to be sitting at about 720CCA and 365CCA for the large and small battery respectively. the voltages measured between terminals are 12.21 and 12.45 volts respectively, large to small. large is 92ah battery, small is 50ah battery.
i am burning more fuel since the program, like about 1.1L/100km more fuel, as well my cold start or subsequent engine starts have a large rpm kick as it turns over whereas before that was not apparent or there.

will post more as the week goes on.

i have read that the 900CCA is at -18c, if it is proportional to the weather, which it seems, then at -25c which we had here a couple of days ago puts the 690CCA reading within spec for -25c temperature.
another thing i read is that the batteries apparently will not be charged, by the bmw system, past 80% full, anything 80-100% would be done with the alternator while drive or regen process under engine compression or braking. food for thought.

UPDATE: got the car back it had to be reprogrammed, my bad battery threshold warning percentage was set to 80%, this was a dealer showroom first x5m f85 delivery as the demo so it had to original coding. they recoded, juiced it up to top with battery restore and said it was fine.

apparently the threshold should be kicking in at 40% or lower battery state.

the soc and soh, state of charge and state of health was apparently 100% for the battery. i will monitor over next few days and report my findings.

i am going to trickle charge it on a 4 amp hour charger overnight and measure again in the morning. take care.

thanks for the good wishes lol, we will see over the next couple of days, i think we are sitting at about -25c tonight. i did put the the 4 amp battery tender on this afternoon and it ended up reaching a "fully charged" state as per the LED in about a 3 hour interval so about 12amps dumped to it.

will measure it again tomorrow morning at around 9am and give feedback then.

Well same problem here, took it to the dealer they gave a run around again saying because my car is "modified" with an exhaust system and DME tune that it was the problem called The SA flagged the car and refused changing the battery unless I'll bring it back to OEM specs

Ok but do you think you have a parasitic draw due to the mod? Is your battery really low or was the message about excessive drain when stationary?
