Front Windshield Replacement

My front windshield took some damage this morning on my way to work and it looks like I'm going to need my front windshield replaced. BMW of silver spring does windshield replacements through a third party contractor and he's quoting me $945 for the replacement with a BMW factory OEM windshield w/HUD (or $65 less for after market). However, I've heard some third party contractors through dealerships don't do such a great job.

I've gotten my windshield replaced through safelite before and they seem to do an excellent job. Safelite's quote online is $570. Unfortunately, I think safelite only carries aftermarket windshields (which I guess I'm ok with but I would like to keep the car original equipment as much as possible).

Does anyone know of a place that will do BMW OEM windshields around the DMV area that can actually do a decent job?

If you dont have HUD, aftermarket is fine. I called safelite a while back to inquire about a replacement. The rep said they could use OE BMW glass but would need more time to get it. Never did discuss price though. I'd call and see what's up. Doesnt hurt to ask

Your auto insurance should cover it under comprehensive coverage. Usually your comprehensive deductible is much less than collision. You can then opt for an OEM replacement. There might be an upcharge in deductible but it should also be covered. If you don't specify that you want an OEM replacement, they'll use a generic one that fits your car. I've had good success with using safelite through my auto insurance. It just depends on the installer. The dealership would do the same and outsource the install but charge you marked up dealer rates.

Cool, yeah. I'll try to give them a call. Thanks.

Good suggestion. I was trying to stay away from going through insurance just to not have to worry about whether it was going to on a record of some sort. I'll have to think about whether this is a valid route.

I've gotten multiple windshields replaced by Windshield City in Chantilly, VA. They always do a great job and have OEM (but not BMW branded) windshields. I have glass coverage with my insurance so my deductible is only $50 for windshields.

Check with agent or insurance company direct. Typically you can replace up to 2 windshields per year before they will start to count against you. They know there is shit flying around everywhere on the roads so they usually won't ding you.

I think there are only two or three BMW certified shops in the area. I had BMW Annapolis install a windshield once. It was OEM. They have a lifetime guarantee on their work too.
