Timing of order to ED delivery
I have nominally struck a deal with a local dealer for an F80 for ED.
I'll be discussing the details with him over the next day or so, but he did mention he did not have any allocations now, but was hoping to have a March allocation available to me, otherwise it would have to be an April allocation. With a needed delivery date of July 2, would an April allocation be too late to risk the delivery date if it comes to that? |

I talked to my CA once in Dec for early April ED, he told me the latest would be Feb to get the contract drawn, just to give you idea. But this dealer is decent size so allocation is never a problem. GL |

1) if you are quite constrained by a specific ED date, why are you wedding yourself to that dealer if they don't have an allocation? Shouldn't finding an allocation be priority #1? 2) are you planning individual options which will add to production time?

You should be ok. I ordered in April ‘16 for a late June deliver, and got the exact dates I wanted.

I've been talking to my dealer for a 2018 Individual M3 with Euro Delivery since last spring because we wanted as much lead time as possible. This is a lower volume local dealer. We started the process in early November by giving our CA our build number and all specifics and agreeing on a price. BMW approved the color and I got an initial VIR the same month.
My dealer got an allocation the first week of February and our CA called us with the production number today. She assures me that everything is on track for a May Euro Delivery. We're just waiting on confirmation of our desired delivery date of Thursday, May 17. This was initially submitted to BMW when the color choice (San Marino Blue) was submitted and approved.

For me, it took about a month to nail down the allocation, build date and ED delivery date. I did the deal with no allocation initially with the dealer promise that they could get one; they traded allocations with another dealer. Everything worked out great and I received my first choice for delivery date at the Welt about a week after the build was placed against an allocation.
I have not been keeping up with it, but I thought F80/M3 builds were hard to come by now, especially with production ending in May. If you have a good relationship with this dealer, then probably nothing to worry about, but if not, you may want to engage with the dealer to ensure you get a warm fuzzy that they will be able to get you an allocation.

My understanding is that the May EOP is not accurate. At least not for US bound cars.*
I guess my only question was whether 3 months is still an ok amount of time to from order placement to ED pick up. It used to be. It seems it still is. Dealer seems on the up & up. It came from him to suggest a P&S for the car with a deposit so that everything would be in place until the allocation opens up. I will see him in person to review & sign tomorrow. *I can see how if it applies to European emissions, they decide it's not worth it to implement changes for just a handful of months for the European market. But if they can continue to sell the car as-is to the rest of the world, why wouldn't they? That would just be giving up money with everything already in place to manufacture the car. It's late summer when the factory shuts down. The Welt might never shut down, I don;t know. I took delivery in 2011 almost on that exact day and it was fully open.

Ahh I see. I remember I wasn’t able to get the date that i wanted because of the factory being shut down. Now that i think about it, i had a late August delivery which was one of the first MY16 deliveries of the model year.

The minimum ED order is 30 days ahead, from order to delivery. Ask your dealer if these 30 days minimum start from order (no allocation) to delivery, or order (with allocation, production number) to delivery. This will help you decide if waiting for this dealer will work with the dates that you already have planned.

Alot of BMW are build and sold as ordered car by consumers, not of the lot ala other mfg. So yes you can order your car with option combo to your liking; even individual color (for more charges like $5000), and this color may not even offer in the BMW other models. All of these ordered BMW can be purchased as ED or US delivered.

Well, I heard from the dealer on Sunday what I expected... no allocations of April. So I moved on to a completely different plan.
Then he calls me yesterday. I don't know what kind of strings he pulled, but somehow he found a dealer with one of the few remaining M3's that could still be changed and I have a car!!! I have a production number and the request has been sent to European Delivery for July 2nd. I am stunned. Time to plan that trip! |
