I've moved from DCT to 6MT - My early observations

Not here at all to ignite the tired DCT vs 6spd debate...both are great, so let's get that out of the way.

Pros with the move to the 6spd:
- Very connected driving experience
- Sunday morning drives on a scenic road have never been more fun
- The special feeling I get that I am driving something that may not be offered soon (bit of a throwback)
- Rev match downshifting (love it or hate it) has made it an incredibly smooth driving experience

Cons
- Def slower off the line, mostly due to my very average manual skills
- About 70% of my weekly commute is in stop/go traffic so gets a bit old shifting non stop and not going anywhere
- Throws are a bit long and the clutch travel is too long as well (just ordered the clutch stop)

Overall, very happy with the change but it is still early...and as I said before both choices are great so please no haters

Look on the bright side. Even if it's stop and go traffic, at least it's flat in Texas.

I drive in 90% stop and go traffic too but its never bothered me. BMW has long had one of the most perfect manual driving experiences out there imo.

I actually prefer the 6MT in traffic because it doesn't coast when you let off the gas. Especially of the F8X, I have found that 2nd gear works great for stop & go. Plenty of torque allows smooth 2nd gear starts and top speed in 2nd is 73mph, so plenty of range to cover stop & go.

Put it in 2nd - press the gas; go - let off the gas; slow down.

I had a ZF Six Speed in my 2007 335i and a DCT in my 2015 M4. I liked both of those transmissions. I would have gone for the MT in my 2018 M4 but I test drove one and hated the auto rev match.

Sport + disables it. I'm with you though, I wouldn't have bought the car in a 6MT if I couldn't at least disable it.

Not any more. With the newer software you need DSC off to disable rev-match.

DCT does not "coast" when you let off the gas. It stays in gear with the clutch engaged, just like a manual .

I have 6MT - Iove the transmission but it definitely feels like it is affecting the performance vs DCT. On the flip side it feels engaging. This was my objective. Happy with choice - however there are no wrong choices.

You will like the clutch stop but match it with the UUC short shift kit. Shifts solid with no wiggling of the shifter.
Straight 1 threw 6 with no bull shit in the middle.

On the bright side, you now don't have to wait an eternity for reverse to engage.

Stop and go traffic you don't need second gear,
because you need to press gas... and most likely break right after.
You want to keep it in 1st not pressing gas at all just let the clutch go and it rolls slow, that's ideal for stop and go.

Not with my M4. Second gear works much better. Thanks.

Nice! The clutch stop will help immensely. I actually went the opposite direction as you, but also have a new infant, so it seemed more logical

ZF8 doesn't coast either. The torque converter is locked out once the car is moving and the car is shifting gears.

This is just mine experience for over 25 year with manual and taught from professional race car driver in Germany.
I am just recommending, everyone can drive the way they like or feel comfortable
There is always more then one way

Well, I have been driving a manual for over 50 years (learned to drive on a manual Renault Dauphine in 1962) and have found that different cars require different techniques. For me, with the M4, 2nd gear works the best and is the smoothest for stop & go traffic. Obviously, if we come to a complete stop, I put it into 1st gear - then 2nd once rolling again.
