Clutch exploded

2008 e90 M3

Something broke apart inside the bell housing. It tore apart my pressure plate, friction disk and parts of the fly wheel are broken off.

It also killed the position sensor.

Some piece of metal got spun around on the inside of the bell housing and left some gouges in the inside bottom of the bell housing and then finally exited by punching a 1/2 hole in the top of bell housing.

Putting in a new clutch kit seems like no big deal. Replacing the sensor also not a big deal.

What I am struggling with is should I just smooth out the gouge in the inside bottom of the bell housing and just put some JB Weld in the hole and call it a day.

Or should I have the gouged TIG welded and ground down and the hole filled.

I worry that the gouge and hole might be the starting point of some future stress crack. I am not really sure what kind of forces are acting on the bell housing.

I also worry that if I have it welded that might in itself create a weakened area.

Anyone have some thoughts about this?

What year car, out of curiosity? A few people with 2008 models have posted about broken clutches.

I would have the bell housing tig welded and would not worry.

We see these occasionally.

Transmissions are cheap for these. Unless you have a skilled welder in your employ it makes better sense to just replace it.

$600-1900 ebay..forums..craigslist..car-parts..wherever. Having a truly skilled welder repair it properly would cost many hundreds and I probably still wouldn't trust their work. Quality work is a lost art these days.
