Why no HUD ???
Dont understand. why they would omit such a high-tech feature out of the most techno-savy sports car yet ...
especially since the M5 had/has it. |

I think its to allow the M6 flagship models to retain some exclusivety, some novel features, without which they would ultimately be rendered pointless by the E92 M3, since afaics the M3 is just as good a GT car, while handling better and offering more practicality.
A bit like Porsche not offering an LSD with the Cayman, and keeping the power down, because if those two things were addressed the car would outperform the 911. Mick |

The M3 is not in the price range for HUDs was what I was told by the dealer. So how come the Nissan blue bird (a 10 year old car), which is much cheaper, has it? But again, if the japs don't throw in such gadgets, people won't fall for them. He also said that they don't want M5/6 buyers considering the cheaper M3 instead. So I guess the HUD is what makes or breaks a car. M3 owners! Trash your ride now! It has no HUD!

The car already weighs enough.

I have had HUD in my X5 for over a year now. If it had been an option when I bought my M3 recently I would not have ordered it.
One thing about it may not be well known. To avoid double images the windshield is specially made with a taper from top to bottom - it is not parallel as usual. I hate to think what a replacement would cost. |

I personally find HUD a very nice feature. Whenever I sit in my other cars without it, it feels odd to not see the stats on the glass especially navigational directions.

I read in a recent car mag about auto fads that never should have been. The auto HUD was included among things like digital dashes (S2000).....

interesting...i think that HUD is cool, but can see how others would think this. looking back it will probably look very dated and elementary.

The obvious value is that you don't have to move your sightline and focus as much to check your speedo/tach, etc. - but one of our sons has been driving F/A-18s for around 15 years, and he says he's never missed it in his cars. Bruce |

I have the HUD on my X5 (came with the option, not selected) and although it was cool at first, I too wouldn't have ordered it with my M3. The best part is the Nav instructions but if you wear polarized sunglasses, the HUD becomes invisible so it's really only useful on cloudy days or at night.

IMHO, HUD is pretty much useless with one exception: showing the V1 radar detector display and your speed on the windscreen when the V1 catches a bogie.

I have driven over 60 000 miles with HUD and really like it. Would have opted it instantly for my M3. Who's HUD supplier for F01?

I've seen the HUD demonstrated, and it didn't look to me like a must-have (IMHO). I saw the IR/nightvision thing at BMW-Welt, though, and that looked like a brilliant idea. A little difficult to watch the navi screen and drive simultaneously, but potentially handy for those of us in the sticks where the risk of hitting moose, deer, fox, etc, is greater than that of hitting a person or car. When they combine the two (HUD and IR), I'll be all over it.
