Intro: Porsche owner with M3 daily driver
I picked up a 2015 M3 last September as a daily driver to replace a Macan S. I’ve been very impressed with the M3’s combination of practicality and performance. I find the engine a real joy and the highlight of the driving experience.
I got the chance to exercise the M3 on the track at VIR a couple of months into my ownership. The first day of the track event had torrential conditions. I was worried the M3 would be an oversteering mess, but it turned out to be pretty capable and fun as long as I was smooth with my inputs and drove clean lines. I came away from that weekend with new respect for the total package of abilities. One problem I’ve had is related to DCT. On every cold start, I get a strong jerk and clunk sound the first time coming to a stop. On getting moving again, I get another jerk and clunk. After the first stop and getting going, the DCT works fine until the next cold start. Anyone else experience this? I recently got the BM3 stage 1 tune with GTS TCU tune. Wow! Gains feel very substantial. This thing pulls hard! I don’t feel the need to mod for more performance. I’m overall very happy with the M3 in its role as fun daily driver. Let me tell you about my weekend car. It’s a Porsche 997.2 GT3. I’ve owned it for about four years. I’ve honestly never driven a street legal car that’s more fun on a twisty road. Steering feel, agility, body control, throttle response and engine music are all awesome. I was tempted to upgrade to a 991.2 GT3 last year, but decided instead to invest in a major project. I had a Porsche specialty race shop do a custom 4.2L motor build starting with the stock 3.8L Mezger. The motor was bored and stroked and used the crankshaft from Porsche’s RSR race car. Next up are handling upgrades. I have a set of JRZ 1232 triple adjustable coilovers waiting to be installed. Anyway, that’s my intro. Look forward to engaging with this community. |

Sweet rides. Unfortunately for me I need something to haul kids and boat, so RR Sport is daily driver and M4 is weekend fun car.
Is the 4.2 build in the car now? Difference in power over stock? Jim |

The DCT is jerky on a cold start, but it's also worth noting that the dealership can update your firmware for you and people have reported improved DCT results with this. I don't know if this will really help with the DCT, but owners of 2015/2016 F80s have reported significant shifting and driving improvements when upgrading from the original firmware. Its worth finding out what firmware you currently have. To do this you will take a blank usb stick, plug it into the car (center console/armrest), go to your i-drive profile and export it to the usb. You plug the stick into your computer and open it up in notepad. There you will look for "<i-step>Fxxx-xx-xx-xx</i-step>", where the x's represent your firmware version. It is worth noting however that the latest firmware is locked and you can't use a tune... With that said, it doesn't hurt to see what firmware you have, as it might be possible to get a 2018/2019 firmware that is unlocked. Welcome to the site and enjoy your nice F80!

I want to let you know that I’m super happy with the build. Down low and in the midrange, the engine reminds me of the old AMG 6.2L naturally aspirated V8, except that it revs to 8500rpm. The single mass flywheel makes it even more fun. The throttle response is just so sharp.

Very nice rides,,, welcome,, sounds like a lot of fun at the track.. I’ve went to a BMW track day and it was raining in the morning, and I thought O great,, but turns out it was the best 1/2 of the day.. You learn so much in the wet..
(note a very inexperienced track driver) But had a great time. As for as the DCT,, I agree with the above, have the BMW check the latest software. The DCT in the M cars in my opinion is very crude but very direct. Enjoy and be safe..
