What up with the gas tank visible in the rear?
Saw another M3 on the road today for the first time, and from the rear, you can really see the gas tank hanging down. I remember seeing this on a ford and my wife and I were ripping on it. How can BMW do this on an M car?
I love my car, best car I've ever owned. But does this bother anybody else?

I think you are seeing the OEM muffler, and not the gas tank

This is a real issue. Even the difusser that's available for this problem is just not large enough to hide the damn muffler.
I have put money aside for the first vendor with a real solution of this. And I do like the sound of the stock exhaust so I don't want to replace it to solve the problem.

Have a good shop drop the muffler and paint it with high temp flat black paint....or you could leave it for a day or two and have it sent out for a ceramic coating...or DIY. I'm wondering if I should scramble and do this since the winter is coming and I'm guessing it is going to rust pretty quickly.

I hope you're right - but a couple of the weld points already look crappy. I'm assuming those will corrode. I'd be concerned about over-spray doing it in place, but I'm sure you could do it with enough masking I suppose.

Easy job. get the back end up on jack stands. Clean the muffler well and let dry. Mask the areas around. Use a heat proof enamel primer to start. Then use heat proof satin (not flat) black paint. Rustoleum or any number of others are fine.

I wondering if that is really the gas tank, how many M3 would have exploded on the freeway by a tiny stone chip.

Why do you say satin and not flat? I agree - not too hard really.

Has anyone done this DIY? And if so, any pics? (maybe a photoshopped pic?)

You have finally exposed BMW.... the "exhaust system" including the after market variety are really gas tanks....now you know why the MPG is so bad....4 big holes in the back....!!!

I also don't like the muffler visible...it's like the design engineers just never looked at the car from far enough back... it's sort of an ugly design (in)consideration... I for one would NEVER spray this with a can... all those little spray particles will land on your M3 as they inevitably float around, or some other car you own, probably the white one!
Remove and coat or spray... don't do this in-place! |
