DCT Owners w/ Track Sessions
in a normal manual car... when there's a spin, standard thing is to get hard on the brakes and clutch in completely to prevent the engine from stalling or backspinning
does DCT have the equivalent to do the same automatically? Thanks Guys!

Good question. Not sure, but I don't think anyone with a DCT on these forums has quite tested that scenario yet.
If it happens to me, I'm just going to hit the eject button and bail.

How does a normal auto handle it?

I remember this being discussed before, but I don't remember if any conclusion was made. If there was a conclusion made, swamp would probably remember. You could also try to find the old thread.

A normal auto is your worst scenario in a spin - power keeps going thru to the wheels until the engine rpms come back down to idle. I learned this the hard way in a 350z I had a few years back.
I don't know about the DCT or SMG (I have an '06 SMG) as I have not spun either. Counter-steering has worked thus far in my '06. |

Have been on track 4 times i my dct car. When you spin if you brake at the same time, the engine will typically not stall. There was however until the recent software update a stalling bug which can kick in on an ad-hoc basis. Havent had the opportunity to test the car with the new software on track yet. Coming in 3 weeks.

Maybe brake and move the shifter into Neutral? That would take some coordination and force you to take your hand off the wheel for a bit.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

I'm wondering the same thing. It may be best to lock up the brakes and risk squaring off the tires than possibly hear a $$$ DCT gearbox turn into granola. I gotta believe BMW has thought this thru and designed in some sort of safeguard.

This brings up one of my old (very old) questions. With ABS, can you lock up all four in a spin? I've been afraid to try it out of fear the car will take off in whatever direction it happens to be pointed in.

Just keep your foot in it! If you're goin round might as well make it look like you meant to do it.
I have no idea...I had always wondered this myself.

In my old SMG E46 M3, while drifting, it will sometimes stall, but most of the time it stays on...... It's tough to spin and see smoke and then realize that the engine is dead... :-)

Lads you are not using the heads....whats the difference between a spin and just coming to a regular full stop in a DCT? None basically, in regular driving, even if you are in manual mode as you slow down the car changes gears down for you and when you come to a dead stop it doesn't stall does it?
Drifting or spinning on purpose doing donuts or whatever is a different matter, the wheels stay driven in the particular gear you have chosen. As I said, been on the track 4 times in the car now and there is no problem. Mick |
