Talking M3 HP

Does anyone know why the European M3 has 6 HP more than the US model?

Am I wrong?

By the way, the new iDrive is excellent and the fact that I can watch my favorite movies makes it even better.

You are confusing 414 bhp with 420 hp(ps). bhp is english and hp (ps) is metric.

1 bhp=1.015 hp (ps)

Wow, you learn something new everyday. I thought that the reason was that the Us spec M3 some kind of restriction need to meet US regulations.

I would have crashed by now if I had the new I-drive and was able to watch DVDs. Full concentration is needed when "really" driving the car. A DVD player would just be a distraction to me, personally. Cool feature though.

Just a different unit system. Like MPG and L/100km, miles and km, etc.

Yes they do have DVD capability. You can watch movies if car is stationary and emergency brake on. Don't know why this is a big deal to some people, but it's there.

i thought euro cars produce slightly more power because they base the power rating on the fuel octanes used there for premium fuel... i mean we usually only get 91 or 93 octane premium here and they get 95 or 98 octane premium there.

On my gas tank filler lid it says I can use 98, so I suppose that in thoery it should produce a little more power than using 91.

Where there's benefit is when you open up the exhaust, increase air intake and feed it 98, that may give you 12-20hp.

Europe and US use a different mathmatical formula for defining octane rating, as has been discussed a million times on this and every other car forum. They also use different standards for the definition of the measure of HP, as has been discussed a million times on this and every other car forum. This thread managed to hit on both of these little tidbits.
There is no performance difference between "Eurospec" M3's and "US spec" M3's. There is no difference in engine software, engine performance, emisions, or anything else that effects performance.

PS. I hate the word "Eurospec". I apologize for using it.

So what is your 91 to Europe's, does it equal 93 and in that case your 93 would equal 95. Which means you don't have a 98?

I don't remember. I try not to keep too much useless information in my head. I have enough trouble sorting through the files as it is.

How about we all go adopt the metric system???

How many feet is a mile? Or fill a pool with water... 80x30x10ft, how many gallons do we need? Try that in the metric system.

Not sure when you need this info, but for the sake of argument...

Having moved here from Europe, I could not agree more. But I guess the US is going metric, inch by inch.....

It is slightly different. I am not going to perform the RON vs AKI calculation, however 93AKI is about 99RON.

Shell V-power has 98-100 in Europe, that's about the 93 here.
