Tachometer Question?

I'm sure this has been asked before, but help me out here. While test driving the E92 DCT the other day, I noticed some "perforation" or little slots above the tach from like 3500-7000rpm or so. I figuered these lit up when it was time to up shift, but I didn't notice it while driving.

Are they just for show?

The shift lights may have been switched off in the test car.

Ok, so once you approach redline those little slots do light up? That's what I thought but was suprised when I didn;t see it happen on the test drive

Anyone have a pic with the lights lit up?
