G12 wireless charger
The pocket in the center console for charging wirelessly, in my opinion, is ill conceived. I would prefer a flat tray to just place the phone on and still have the display be visible while driving. Has anyone tried the following:

I installed it myself 2 years ago in my 2018 740i. It charges my iPhone X Max great.
Only downside I've notice is the camera bump on newer iphones, when used with a case, cause too much space to where the phone won't charge. Also, when installing, find the blueprints for the center console so you can properly remove the cup holder and get access to the underlying electronics. It's not hard, but a bit tricky. |

I actually prefer the pocket in the center console as it eliminates temptation to look at the phone. Carplay is the safest way to do that. Texts get read, and I can respond by voice. maps get shown, etc. The tray is located in a place where you must really take your eyes off the road to look at the phone. If the phone needs to be seen, a cradle IMHO is better than the tray and wired charging will always be faster than wireless.

I bought the one you linked. 2018 version. It's not a "fast" charge. The phone does not get hot on my 30 minute drive back and forth from work, but does charge well.
When I'm using CarPlay navigation or Wi-Fi hotspot for the kids, when on the charger, the phone gets hot. I am not aware of a wireless charger that exists that doesn't cause the phone to get hot when under heavy data usage. If it's a longer road trip I'll switch to a wired charge. |
