Driving down the road and the car in the next lane kicked up something off the road (looked like a power supply for something that fell of a pickup or other vehicle) and it took a weird bounce and headed right towards me. Bumper to bumper in all 3 lanes and I swerved but it ended up right under my car.

Got to red light, saw some smoke and the low oil pressure warning. Nowhere to stop right there so went about 1/10 of a mile to a parking lot and turned car off. Waiting for tow to my Indy shop.

Second time this happened. First time no oil leak or warnings and just took it in as a precaution only to find cooler damaged (by cone in that case). State reimbursed me for that one because I was on the turnpike. Guessing I will be SOL on this one unless I want to file an insurance claim and they cover it.

I wish people would secure their fucking cargo.

Did you have any aftermarket skid plates to protect the oil cooler?

You should really get one. The metal doesn’t flex like the plastic factory one and will keep your cooler in tact. One of the first few mods I did; worth the piece of mind of not losing all your oil and possibly an engine.

Any recommendations on which ones to consider. Plan to search / research when I get home. Been a long morning.

I run the black Turner one which looks to be discounted at 15% off at the moment, or 25% off for the natural finish. The other one I see used a decent bit is from Fall Line.

I learned my lesson after the first one. Mishimoto oil cooler and Turner skid plate. Way more robust than stock...

What the GWB quote, “There's an old saying in Tennessee, I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee that says, fool me once, shame on...shame on you. Fool me, well, you can't get fooled again.”

Hope it doesn't set you back too bad OP.

$1,600 repair including OEM cooler, oil, filter, supplies, tax, etc. I'll try to get the state to reimburse again but that was probably a one-time deal because I was on a toll road the first time.

Also ordered Turner skid plate with overnight delivery so I can get it on while it is in the shop and avoid another outing tied to this. It isn't cheap but the thought of having something like this happen on the ride to NC on I-95 or I-26 with my wife and dogs in the car on a hot summer day was more than enough to see the value and just go ahead and get it.

Thanks all.

Wow, what super-crappy luck, sorry OP. The universe clearly wanted you to get a skid plate -- hopefully this is the last time!

$1,600 is pretty steep to just replace the engine oil cooler/radiator plus new engine oil and filter. The mishimoto one is a tad under $600. If you don’t mind getting underneath the car, it is just a simple bolt on and removal/reattach of two oil lines. I would stick with the OEM oil cooler and it likely cost less than mishimoto one. The OEM oil cooler is more than sufficient and I’d have not heard anyone of overheating their engines.

The turner metal skid plate is a must have. Again it’s a simple bolt on. Look at the tuner website and believe they have a short video on install.

Oh. I see your car is already at the shop. Ok then, might as well spend the money there. Towing the car back to your place will likely be a few hundred dollars itself.

Well the owner of the shop that installed the one I just purchased told me he doesn't think it will make much of a difference vs. OEM if something hits it directly. I had him install in anyway but question whether it was worth the price and plan to continue to try to avoid running over anything as much as possible.

I like the fall line one but for double the cost whats the difference? Also, mine happened after hitting a "invisible" curb at about 0.5 mph. literally touched the thing. hate myself for it, but I'm hoping its just a hose that popped off vs the whole cooler. it may just be the coupling, but even then still need a whole need cooler

BTW, future classics has fall line guard at $695.00 vs autoteknic and IND that has it at $900 something.

It really depends on what you may hit on the road. In my case, it more bent the oil cooler, which I'd expect the skid plate to be much more effective.

They do have aluminum crossing members. Can something smaller fit in the hole, sure...but there needs to be some opening down there.

This was my damage from crossing the in field at ~75MPH...which is why I got the skid plate.

First time I had damage it was bent too. Didn’t know it was damaged until I took it in a few days later.

This time around it was punctured.

Hopefully there’s not a third time, but I have the Turner skid plate and will report back if there ever is a third time.

If it happens a third time you can try the mishimito cooler it's more robust
