My apologies to all!

I owe all of you an apology.

For a while I have been posting that the Sport Seats don't make a difference and that the standard seats are good enough.

Well, I was wrong!... partially. I'll explain.

I posted that the sport seat is uncomfortable and even painful to sit in. This is true for me and others that have posted the same thing.

I have posted that the standard seat provides an adequate amount of support. I WAS WRONG! I know this now, and I must apologize to all of you. I have noticed that when I drive and turn the 135i very hard, I do NOT have enough lateral support. It isn't horrible, but nonetheless, it is definately NOT supportive enough.

So... I am setting the record straight here, as I have always been a man of integrity. I have posted on other forums for years, and when I make a post, I make a sincere effort to be highly credible.

To sum up... The standard seat is NOT adequate under extreme driving conditions. I do not know what the solution is for someone like me since the Sport seat is too uncomfortable for me, and the standard seat is simply not adequate under extreme driving conditions. I may need to find an aftermarket seat in the future.

For those that have not yet ordered... consider this post when you do.

Once again, my sincere apologies to all.

I had an E46 M3 comp package with Sport Seats and its seats were nowhere near supportive enough either. I'm not sure any BMW seats are "enough". I have my 135 on order with the sports seats, manual versions on purpose for helmet head room. However, I still suspect Recaro may be in my future so I can fit my helmet in the car (I am 6' 2").

I just sold my 997 GT3 - now THOSE are some supportive seats. But I do recommend you workout and eat right to fit into them

I believe the sport seats are not only more supportive; but, are also more comfortable for a long trip. Of course, I spend a lot of time in a Sparco Circuit Pro and in a past life spent extended hours riding on my survival kit with only a hint of a cushion.

ha its all good man, i remember reading that post actually.

i think the sport seats are necessary for hard driving, and i found the lateral support actually extremely comfy

I had the exact same issue when I started looking at the 3 series and the 1 series. When I sat in the 3, there was no question that the sport seats were just to darn tight. Then i sat in the 1 about 6 months later it is fit GREAT with the sport seats. I have no idea why, although I have lost about 15lbs during that time. Waist is 38".

Thanks! Some of those seats look nice. Are they easy to install, and replace the power seats that are factory installed? I wonder if there is a way to try them.

Seats are generally one of the easiest things to replace! A lot easier than replacing a back from a poorly designed seat, anyways. Simple bolt-in, bolt-out installation. You'll probably have to get new rails to mount them on, but those generally come with the seat. If you click "Dealer Search" near the top of the Recaro page, and punch in your Zip, it'll find nearby dealers. They should have seats there for you to try out!

Recaro also sells some OEM seats, like those in the S4 and RS4, which you can also order. Not just Audi, either  http://www.recaro.com/index.php?id=2621&L=2.

Recaro makes such a wide range of seats, you're probably best off talking to a dealer who sells them locally, you can advise you as to what will work well for you. A lot of motorsports oriented performance shops sell them. Here's one such shop around me: http://www.stableenergies.com/

Fantastic information. I just located a dealer that is not too far from me. I will be in their area later in the month. I'll try to stop by and meet them.

Thanks!!!!

NOTE: modern Factory seats have side airbags in them and also the pre-tensioning seat belts, all safety items you will give up for replacement third party seats.. YOu will also have to have the dealer turn OFF the side airbags, if that is possible with BMW.. THis is what PORSCHE people have to do if they install 996 GT3 seats in a 997/987

You may try to find the seats in the Performance catalog.. soon there will be someone importing, BUT the cost with the Euro so high, will be up there.

You raise a good point.

As I think about it, I know an amazingly talented auto uphostery guy. I wonder if he and his crew could build up the side bolsters a bit, to achieve some additional support, and still retain the proper look. If so, all the airbags and power controls would remain intact... and I'd have a custom seat!

I think I'll pay him a visit soon.
