Red European Delivery "Temporary" Number Plate
During my previously frequent visits to Lauderdale BMW service for my MINI, I had occasionally seen the red ED number plate on vehicles. I had heard that the Germans had changed policy recently that the number plate need to be surrendered and are property of the German government. Can anyone who has recently taken ED on their 1er verify this? If true, has anyone managed to smuggle their number plate stateside?

No, you can still take the plates with you. At drop off you can take the front plate and as long as no one steals it between drop off and redelivery you can keep the rear one as well. The rear plate was in my trunk when I picked it up at redelivery.
