Angry dealers, salesmen, anyone else who may know.. please help!

Of course things can never work out perfectly in this world!

A little while ago I posted about how I contacted a dealership near me and they found an '08 model and offered to ship it to their location.. Well as it turns out the car they found was "slightly" used.. driven around by the manager of its original dealership... for EIGHT HUNDRED MILES! are you serious?? I told them, "so this is a used car, so what kind of deal am I getting for this USED car, it should be much less than the $2500 off MSRP?" They refused to acknowledge that this car is, in fact, USED! I asked how is it possible that a car can be driven for 800 miles and it not be considered used? They gave me some crap about the manager driving blah blah blah.

So I found another car in PA.. exact same car quite literally (there's a few in the same configuration throughout the Northeast), I inquired about it and guess what.. this one was driven by the manager as well! But only 180 miles worth.. I asked again, how much of a discount on this particular "used" car.. and again the dealership vehemently held their position that the car is in fact "new".

Last I checked there was one more car of the exact same configuration that I want, and this one is in Massachussetts. By the time I got through all of this the MA dealership was closed so I haven't found out if this manager felt the itch to test drive the 1er as well. My worry now is that this guy did as well, and these guys won't be wanting to sell their "new" car for anything but "new" car price..

So here's my question for anyone that may know.. how do they think they can pass these cars off as new?? Also, does anyone think I can drive it into their heads that this car is in fact NOT new? Or at least give them the satisfaction of saying it's new but still get a worthy discount?

Otherwise I may just have to get back on my MY09 order... Or I could just tell them I can get a "new" 10k miles '06 M3 for the same price!

If it's only the miles no real big deal as long as they start your warranty as if it has zero miles on it. However, on the one that has 800 miles, you need to get $2500 off or go for the one that has only 180 miles with a nice discount if possible. Otherwise just order one.

I would say if they want to say its new then let it be "new" however definitely use it to your advantage to see if you can get any perks if they don't offer anything else discount wise ie. free extended warranty? tint? etc.

They get to say it is 'new' because it has not yet been sold to a first buyer. Legally, it is in the same category as a new car parked in the back lot right after being rolled off the transport truck. When sold to a first buyer, these cars will likely come with BMW's new car warranty...except that, while it will run for 4 years from date of purchase, the mileage portion of the warranty will be slightly reduced since the first miles have been burned off by the sales staff.

Dealers who do this want to get some exposure to the new product but don't want to pay much for that privilege. And I can hear the analytical types on the sales staff: 'We only used 1.5% of the warrantied mileage (800 mi / 50,000 mi warranty) and we've dropped the price well below that (1.5% of $40K = $600), so this is a huge bargain on a 'new' car.

Yes, the car is 'used' - it's used 800 miles worth (or 180 miles worth). How much of a price break is that worth? Totally your call...

That's just a manager abusing his power of his position. Find another dealership, and just place an order for a car. A car with ~500 miles will have the storyline of "customers test drove it." This is poor business practicing and I suggest you use an honest dealership.

800 miles is a demo car, normally these get priced down quite a bit

Dan is right on the money on this one.

The most powerful bargaining chip you have is the ability to turn and walk away from the deal. I bet if you do a little more shopping, you will find a dealer that is willing to work with you.

yeah that's what I'm afraid of. My plan is to check out the last car, see if this one was "test driven" by the manager as well. If it is/was, i'll see if i can get a big big discount on any of the cars. if not i'll either try to find another 08 that suits me, or i'll just order a freakin 09, it just won't be worth it for an 08 any more..

i would talk them down as much as possible, but once the car is titled and sold, the warranty period begins.... there was a GTO stolen at my local dealership and when they got it back it had 800 miles on it.. it was sold "new" but for alot less than usual (like 3k less)
