The 1st thing you do is drive it.

That depends on how the car was detailed at the dealer. If they did not prep the car, and if you can see swirl marks, you should start off with a clay bar treatment, followed by a good quality two or three step product. I prefer Zaino - do a search on this forum. You definitely want to protect the finish against bugs, birds and tree sap. Also - put Zaino on the wheels so that the brake dust is easy to clean off.

Wax or seal the car asap. No need to wait for paint curing.

Depends on quality when you pick up. Mine sat on the lot for a while and had swirls, so I used a more intensive polish. If you are just receiving it new, use a sealant, like Zaino, that is non-abrasive.

Clay it

My 135i had not been at the dealer for more than a few days when I bought it. First thing I did was wash it, and then I clayed it.

The clay removed more grit then I expected. I'm guessing some crap adheres to the paint during shipment. Not a ton, but enough that I think the clay was not a waste.

No swirls in my paint, so then my next step was wax on / wax off.

I washed, clayed, sealed - Used Klasse All in One polish, then three coats of Klasse High Gloss sealant - 8hrs between each application. Then 3 coats Pinnacle Souveran paste wax - Wait 2 hours then a 'touch up' of Pinnacle Crystal Mist.

I hand applied all of this - Great results !

Autogeek supplied it all - The worst part - thats about 3 days your new 1er has to stay in the garage.........

As a further - oh boy you have got to be kidding me - While doing the Klasse - hit each wheel (Outside and inside) - Trust me watching the brake dust fall away with a hose is SO worth it.

I tell the dealer to only wash the car, no wax or buffing. I have seen many new cars on lots with swirl marks and I do not even want the hassle of dealing with them over swirl marks. I then do the clay bar and Zaino process. If you go that route take a good look for extra Cosmoline just under the hood and door jams. Clean it up before you start the claybar.
