BMW warranty question
I am picking up my new car on fri, but the SA is pressing me to get the back end stuff, like paint protection, tire warranty, and this bmw inclusive warranty (covers breaks, wiper blades etc.). Really is it necessary in the first 4 years of ownership with reg driving that I would need these costly warrnaties? My previous ride a 04 mz 3 I bought a 5 year extend warranty and used it once when the air conditioner went, they paid on $100 out of $250 repair. So I paid $2000 for a warranty I didn't use. What is your guys opinion of this extra warranty offered by BMW is it worth the $800 for 60k or $1700 for 80k? I mean will a new BMW really have major failures that is requiring this warranty is first 4 years?
Any advice appreciated, seems to me they want more profit out of me on back end of sale! |

it won't have major failures, their normal warranty is pretty comprehensive, and their extended one is pretty expensive. Also, please check, but I believe you can opt in before the normal one expires. Warranty is insurance, it's based on fear, not probabilities (when you are the consumer... it flips if you are the company).
For instance, I picked up my car today, it went in for a bit to have the window seals changed for free because BMW is replacing them to eliminate wind noise... I say don't get it.

That's what I thought, I am going to waive these "back end" sales stuff. I mean the SA and dealership want me to get these so that they can pad their profit quota. Otherwise why would they be "hassling" me to consider these after the deal has been done at least on buying the car? To instill fear in you about their product breaking down during ownership and the "exhorbitant" costs to repair seems foolish to me. Besides buying the service inclusive for 3yrs at $800 or 4yrs $1700 would make the CDN warranty match US! Another that we are ripped off up here. Bad enough to pay $1000 more for Freight, but to pay to get up to USA warranty is really dumb! Thanks guys for the advice.

Yeah I got it a ok! They didn't press me any further on the warranties, I figured they would try and pan me to get them, but just signed paper work no questions asked. I love this car, light years ahead of my previous mazda 3! It is so tight and sporty, you can take corners as if riding on rails! I am just a little paranoid though that I will get door dings in parking lots so am looking for out of the way areas to park, but they are inevitable eventually. I will need to get pics up!

You have up to one year from in service date to opt in for the "wear" items warranty, this covers brake pads and rotors, clutch, wiper blades, belts and hoses.
For your 135i: 3 yrs / 60,000Km : $ 795.00 4 yrs / 80,000Km : $ 1,650.00 5 yrs / 80,000Km : $ 1,975.00 I don't know if this is worth it - I have three weeks to decide. Has anyone actually got the required service items/schedule? Will this package pay for itself? |

In Canada, the wear items are not covered by standard warranty. Brake Pads, rotors, clutch, belts, wipers plus labour. These are all pay as you go - or else you add the maintenance warranty. You can add this up until one year from your original in-service date. The thing is, will your pads or rotors or clutch wear out in three/four/five years?
Your BMW Service Program Upgrade includes the following wear items: Brake pads, wear sensors and rotors Clutch disc (if applicable) Engine external drive belts Adjustments as a result of normal driving conditions Wiper blades Parts and labour for all of the above For your 135i: 3 yrs / 60,000Km : $ 795.00 4 yrs / 80,000Km : $ 1,650.00 5 yrs / 80,000Km : $ 1,975.00 Years are measured from your original in service date. I guess it depends how you drive but I doubt the brakes would be worn before 3 yrs\60k?
4 or 5\80k seems more likely but at that point you would spend more with the warranty than just replacing the brakes based on the pricing in Lester's post above. What do you think? M |

Is it better to pay as you go? I agree - the three year plan is probably designed not to kick in except for air filter, and wiper blades. If you buy replacement rotors and pads from some place like United BMW - they will likely cost far less than in Canada - then you just need any performance shop to install them (the dealer probably won't install parts you have purchased elsewhere). The only caveat are the belts - does anyone know what the actual N54 service schedule is on these? BMW can void your warranty on the engine if you fail to keep these service schedules.
