JB3 and sevice
Hey everyone, my 135 was a 02/08 build and i have a JB3 and DCI. My car i due for its first regular service and i was wondering if i need to take both out? and if i do, will BMW be able to tell i had a tune? From what i understand anything before March 08 will not record a tuner code? Just want to clear things up before i bring her in, thanks.

Use BT scanner to remove any warranty codes before bringing it in for service.

yea, you definitely should remove both the JB3 and DCI before taking it in. Unless you know the service people, or you've talked to them and they said it's fine.

my dealership was cool with my intake and exhaust but every dealership is different so i would just be safe and take off both. and +1 on using a BT scanner to clear any hidden codes the JB3 might have thrown.

If it's just an oil change, I'd check for codes with the BT scanner, and leave the JB3 in place. The DCI intake I'd probably remove just because it's obvious, and might prompt them to start poking around for other stuff.
If you're planning on having ANY other work performed while it's there, I'd remove everything. If they plug into the ECU for any reason (such as a software update to fix the radio), something might go wrong and start them on a witch hunt. |

But why would you remove the JB tune when taking in for the oil service??
I had the software upgrade performed via the OBDII port and left the JB3 installed and it wasnt detected.. |

Could it be that when you start the car it says 7500 miles? That would mean you have 7500 miles left till service is due, and would bring you in for a service at 16,000 miles total which is normal.

I think people here are over panic about dealers seeing their mods. Most dealers are Ok with intake and exhaust mods. They may not like the ECU tune if it caused them extra time to debugs things. My first scheduled service visit will be within the next 4 weeks (1500 miles remaining), and I am going to bring in the car as is and we will see.

I wish they are not stupid enough to replace my Injen filters with stock paper filter:-):-):-).
My son told me at their Honda dealership, the service tech go by the book to replace a drop in K&N filter with a stock paper filter on a S2000.

BT your car and clear any codes. Turn off the JB3 (pass through at that point).
As long as they don't open the ECU it "shouldn't" be detected. or You could spend the 1 hr. to uninstall and reinstall + BT your codes and be SURE you won't have an issue. let us know how it turns out... |

The only warranty work which I expect them to do is oil change, brake pad and rotor replacement; unless HPFP and turbos quit on me which can be a bigger problem to ask for warranty work with the ECU tune on.
I fully understood the risk involved and I would like to challenge BMW's warranty policy if I have to. If US elected Obama as US president, any thing can happen. So, wish me go luck.

If you are a responsible modder you shouldn't have any issues with dealership maintenance. But if your car looks like mine expect some prying eyes!
And to add to our experience, 1 year on the JB3, no hidden codes stored! |

Your car goes in for service every, what, 6 months? If even that?
You can't spend an hour every 6 months to take the piggyback out to ensure that you avoid a ten thousand dollar repair bill when they replace your engine and decide not to cover it? I've seen dealers jump directly to "the engines bad" over a fuel pump. It happened on my fathers STS: They tried to get him for $10000 he said "screw that Ill fix it myself for a couple hundred bucks" and he did. Im stock for now, but I promise you the day I order a piggyback is the day I order a BT tool. And the day I take my car in for service I will remove it. It's just not worth the risk. |

I dont know about the US , but in Oz some of the BMW dealerships are not owned by BMW Australia but privately run franchise's. So in reality, some of their income is attained through warranty work, which they wont turn away and risk loss of rebates from BMW for the work carried out.. |

It's amazing, just unbelievably amazing, people still ask these questions. Let's see, 30 minutes of your time to take it out, 30 minutes to put it back in, or the potential of losing your warranty. Hmm Those same people are the types who would ask online, "should I wear a condom when I go bang this whore I'm going to see tonight? She promises me she doesn't have AIDS or any STD's, so what do you think?" Wish people would stop asking stupid questions like that. It really comes down to common sense (which isn't so common really) Take it out and not worry about warranty voiding, or gamble and hope that they won't void your warranty and then charge you thousands if something goes wrong on your car. |
