iPod Option - Charges iPod?

Hey everyone. Is the iPod option supposed to charge your iPod as it is playing? I used my iPod mini the other day, and it worked all day without a problem. Afterwards, I took it out and went to use it on its own and the battery was dead. I know it is old and the battery is not the best, but I thought the iPod option charges it. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Either factory installed 6FL option or the mObirdge kits will charge usb-compliant iPods/iPhones.

3rd generation (and previous) nanos are still firewire as with the iPod mini.

4th Generation nano is USB-based.

I bought an iPod Mini in May of 2005. It came with a USB cable. I bought a first gen iPod Nano in October of 2005. It also came with a USB cable. Both charge through these cables. Can't speak for second and third gen Nanos. You are correct about fourth gen Nanos.

USB/Firewire refers to the circuitry within the iPod, not the docking cable that was provided with the unit. All older iPod/iPhone/touch models are firewire charging with the exception of current model iPod units:

6th Generation iPod with video (referred to as the "Classic")
2G touch
3G/3GS iPhone
4th Generation nano

These units fall into the +5V USB charging requirement.

Since the shuffle is not compliant with any BMWs, it's excluded.

Since all of the iPods I referred to charge just fine through the USB interface, I don't understand what you are referring to as "Firewire charging". Are you making a distinction between low power (100 mA) and high power (500 mA) USB devices? Are you saying 4th gen Nano is 100 mA and the older ones were 500 mA? Are you saying the 6FL won't supply the 500 mA but will supply the 100 mA? Isn't all USB +5V nominal?

Put another way: you refer to "USB compliant". What about the old iPods (past the first one or two models) was not compliant with USB specs?

Not trying to be difficult--but trying to clarify the issue you are describing.
