first real road trip, the 135i is capable of 28.3 mpg,I was shocked

Well we went on our first real road trip today. LA to Lake Tahoe via 395 then over monitor pass dropping down into south lake then onto tahoe city. Took 8 hours and 15 minutes, including a 20 minute stop for the highway patrol to give me a tint ticket. He was in training and a nice young guy so I wont rant on that. Car did great, especially with the performance suspension over Monitor pass. No real speed runs this trip, only got up to around 100 passing. The good part: per the car's computer which was reset at the gas station in redondo beach I got a whopping 28.3 mpg, avg speed was 65.2 mph. I really didnt think the 135i was at all capable of 28+ mpg so I am very happy with that!

I just got back from Ohio the other day (10 hour drive). Got 29.7 MPG according to my own calculations. The 1er can be a fuel misser if you try.

Not that I would advise anyone how to drive, but I gotta think that in highway cruising mode, a 135 would be close to a 128 in MPG. You're not calling up the turbos that often.

Good to hear about your mileage.

I saw 31mpg on the way back from Indy on Saturday morning. It's about a 200 mile trip and very little interstate, just a lot of open roads with 60MPH speed limits. The mileage on the 135 is great between 60 and 70MPH, but it starts to fall off pretty quickly after that. You'll see high 20s with no problem cruising at 65MPH, but if you're running 80 it drops to under 25. I've seen an all highway tank down around 21MPG, but I'm not going publically admit what the average speed was.

yea I can easily see high numbers on flat roads especially, but because of the route I took, I hit 7-8000 foot summits several times, which makes it all the more impressive, of course I wasn't shooting for any time records this year, my brothers and I did the drive a couple years back in just a few minutes over 7 hours...

I've found on past vehicles, and my RV that I actually get better mileage crossing mountains than driving on flat ground. My RV gets 15MPG on flat ground, and about 7 going up hill. The thing about the mountains is that when you come down the back side you're getting almost infinite MPG, because you're just drifting. In other words the mileage is much better on the way down than it is worse on the way up. On of my best tanks ever in the RV was crossing the divide through Vail, CO and it did 18MPG.

Do you guys try to cruise as much in 6th gear as possible? I have an auto - I find that unless I use the sports shift mode and keep it in M6 - the car will shift back to M5 whenever I push down on the gas as if the car was trying to give me more power.

i keep it in 6th gear when i am cruising. but it should downshift to give you more power in the auto, that way you have throttle response especially if you are hitting that little button at the end of the accelerator, after all that is the drop shift kick button

It significantly improves when the car has about 5-6K miles on it.

I agree. Mine picked up a couple of MPG as it neared the 10k mark for sure.

I'm also in the 28-30 range on long HW cruises. I've broken 30 on cooler months with cruise control and sub-70MPH speeds.
