Ontario drivers: Is delaying a court date for a ticket a big deal?
I got nailed on a stupid rolling stop sign that the cops sit at all day every day (wasn't paying attention). My court date is Oct. 9th and I want to postpone it until spring. Is it a big deal? Do you need a letter of some sort? Some proof you'll be out of the country?
Thanks! |

just have someone go into court for an adjournment? and itll be fine....just make up some excuse...usually, "family emergency back home" is enough for an extension...you cant really choose when you want it though.

It's not a big deal at all. If you are actually going to be out of the country, then bring the proof. Language is important, for example "I would like to request that this trial be moved to April 14th at 10am so that I have enough time to prepare".
If they say that is too far away, then say you will accept the date they give you however you will not be able to sufficiently prepare for the trial given that you will be out of the country and the court assumes all commercial injuries for any trial date prior to April 14th at 10am. Don't get into any discussions, you will always lose, just stick on that point. If you have a nice judge, it won't be an issue. |
