Think about what you just asked.... I drove an average of 138 yesterday for 45 minutes straight. The car is fine, BMW didnt create a vehicle that dies as such.

Ok, so your wheel bearings saw some higher levels of heat, sustained for 10 minutes. Same with your CV joints. Beyond that, the engine saw higher rpm, but again, depending on which gear you were in, it may not have even been high rpm, relatively speaking (e.g. 6th in the 6MT or 7th in the DCT). And needless to say, the car is designed to take this, as is your bargain Hyundai Elantra and Chevy Cruze (those are great cars in their segments, IMO). So not sure why you are so worried.

From the owner's manual:
"From 1200 to 3000 miles, Engine and road speeds can be increased gradually up to a traveling speed of 135 mph. Use the maximum speed only for brief intervals, e.g. when passing." So much for breaking-in the car...173 mph for 10 minutes in the US?...are you nuts? |

Where the hell did you find a road to do this short of a NASCAR track??? I have no Idea where this kind of sustained speed is possible. 173MPH x 10 Min = ~28.83 Miles covered. Thats a lot of road!!!
I'd recommend you refrain from posting this sort of info in the future. All kinds of people read these forums!!! |

And there is a huge difference between recommended, occasional short period of 135mph and sustained 173mph. I mean sure break-in period is a little over rated but come on, this is a little on the wild side.

the M3 was built to cruise comfortably, meaning both for the passenger and for the engine, at around 250km/h which is roughly 130mph. you have nothing to worry about.
